Hey, at least he knew he was free.... to go to Canada and not get drafted.... He won't forget the men who died to give that life to him, since he didn't die along with them. I guess he wouldn't gladly stand up and defend her after all.... Hee hee.
Yeah, I'd say writing a song like that then dodging the draft is uber hypocritical.

Why do you say he dodged the draft ?
He had a hardship problem,it does not say what.
My brother had a hard ship problem, with supporting my Mother and 7 kids( because my dad was not a real man)plus helping out my grandparents.
My brother later signed up,but was turned down because of health. His daughter served in Iraq for 18 months.
Now I do think the guy has a problem with women 4 wife's,come on.<><

This was a portion of the original song, before it was edited to be more marketable:
I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
and gave that right to me.
Though I will dodge the draft so I don't become like them!

Can't you be proud to be an American but still disagree with a war? It doesn't make him hypocritical, just as it doesn't make each person who doesn't enlist in the armed forces hypocritical for having American pride.

Gosh, how about some honesty in lyrics, like we require truth in advertising?
"Well, I’m glad to live in America,
Where they take good care of me.
'Cause I’m white, and male, and Republican,
And a Christian, too, you see.
And I’ll gladly stand up
And wave the flag
When Bush and Cheney say,
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt
They’re on my side…
God Bless the USA!"

A 3A hardship does not mean he dodged the draft. It means he had to stay home and help his parents. And people are not born saved. That is why it is called being born again.
Isn't it nice to know that God, unlike you hypocrits give people a second chance. Sometimes more.

I hate that song with every fiber of my being!!!!! However, I'm not surprised he's a draft-dodger. Most people who glorify war, patriotism, etc. have never been in a war.

Clinton dodged the draft and he was elected the president of the US.
Of course, he can't produce one hit wonders like Greenwood can...

i have no view of him, i do not know him - and if we do not know a person we should have no view, "good" or "bad."
i am a pacifist - all wars are wrong
i am a follower of jesus - so i take no oath to a nation
who he is, is who he is - what he has done, is what he has done - it truly is that simple
