If you're trying to solve a problem, take a clean sheet of paper and write the problem in the middle. Then write down the first thing that comes to mind and draw a line from the problem statement to your first thought. If your first thought triggers another thought, draw a line from your first thought to the next thought.
If you think of something completely different from your first thought, write that on a different portion of the paper and draw a line from it to the problem statement. If your second thought leads you to other thoughts, write those down and draw a line from your second thought to these next thoughts.
Keep adding new thoughts, no matter how absurd they seem. Let your mind roam free.
I hope I'm being clear. It's hard to describe this process - it's much easier to show it. But it's very difficult to show it here, when you can't use html.

have a look for some lateral thinking questions on the net often the answer is not as it appears or the question is worded so it appears to make no sense. the theory is the more you do the more you train your mind to 'think outside the box'. also try puzzles and the like.

When you get to the edge of the box, think - what is the most outrageous thing I could think of right now? How else could this project, idea or plan be expanded to include something way MORE???? This is called imagination and it takes work after age 11.

by saying that you want to think outside the box just shows that you're still in the box. the "box" represents restraint and conditioning on your part to be "normal", to be apart of. when you stop being concern with what others think of you and your ideas then you are free to explore different avenues, "the road less taken". then your ideas will be "outside the box". temper your imigination with reality, by asking yourself "could this really work?"

Pretend youre someone else. Sounds weird, but it helps. Imagine a person dealing with "the box" if they came from another background, if they were from another gender, if they were richer or poorer than you. Wonder how other people would think about it, and imagine different perspectives of your ideas from there.

First start thinking that there is no box.
Think of ideas where you have unlimited resources.
Think of ideas that are innovative ways to use the resources you have.
