In my opinion that ruins the sarcasm.

I'll take a stab. Two reasons why regulars might make it obvious they are being sarcastic:

1) Sarcasm by its very nature is more discernible via facial inflection and verbal cues. It does not always translate well in writing, ESPECIALLY if the reader does not know the author's intent. (Of course, as you mentioned, regulars would know when regulars were being sarcastic but any non-regulars would not.)

2) There are a lot of STUPID people on R&S. (I'm assuming I'm not offending anyone since those that think they're stupid can't find fault with my statement, and those that don't think they're stupid will assume I'm referring to someone else). Regulars are just lessening the likelihood of newbies or the clueless launching into an attack because they missed the sarcasm & misinterpreted what was said. But I do agree it lessens the impact.

As a caveat, I'm always dumbfounded when I post a link to an Onion article, only to have a 1/2 dozen answers telling me the obvious: "That was fake", or better yet: "Was that true?"

Once in a blue moon, a disclaimer helps when the sarcasm doesn't transmit well via type. Other than these rare occasions, I'm inclined to agree with you.

True sarcasm is an art. And I'm not being sarcastic.

I don't know. I never have disclaimed any sarcasm I have used. But then I rarely use it. If I use it, I call it irony.

Of course naming it ruins it. It's like someone who says, "I don't mean to be rude, but . . ." and then proceeds to be rude.

Right, because you would totally understand the difference through reading text. It's not like books or other things that can be read do that. You shouldn't go read a book.

...lolsarcasm

I like squirrels. They're always throwing nuts at me from up in the trees.
