You can rest assured it wasn`t for the same reason your murdering " Brown" Spanish Conquistadors , Pizarro , Cortes`, Orellana , Cabaza de Vaca , and all the other ones` in between didn`t learn to speak Aztec , Mayan , or the language of the Incas` ?? Ponce de Leon , did he learn to speak Seminole ? Nope , no need to learn the language of the civilization you completely destroy ; then murder , rape , and pillage leaving nothing but your stench of death . Read about Cortes' capture of The Aztec King Cuauhtemoc , and the same day as the surrender the Spanish looted the city ! All the captives were forced back . Later it was ordered that all of the captives be sacrificed everywhere in their temples`.See; you don`t have time to learn their language , you murder them before they can teach it to you !! I can only imagine how "grateful" those civilizations are that the Spanish wiped from the face of the earth were ; to have had bilingualism enhance their lives , even if only for a day ! The American Indian is still around today , and they do speak English very well .

So learning cherokee would have better enabled Americans to put a man, in a rocket, on the Moon, have another spaceship orbit Mars, split the atom, and win 2 world wars? I don't think so.
Over the last 10 years there have been many nationalities emigrating into England; Polish, Hungarian, Romania, Latvian, French, Spanish, German, Nordic, Checks, Italians and dozens of others from Eastern Europe who's Countries Americans will never have heard of.
They all have to learn English, why? Because if you are in England and do not speak English you are absolutely F--u -cke-d, there is nobody around to help you, you would have to go to an Airport to get help or call the police. I have seen it happen.
People in England, generally have no understanding of other languages, why should they?, what is the point? do they really have the time to learn many different languages?;
I think not.
Here is my point, we need a single language so everyone can communicate effectively to progress in society. We must choose one language; so why not the language of the majority of the home country. (USA) which happens to be the most widely spoken and understood language in the Universe, why complicate things? you know it makes sense.

First of all .......... for all of you who say .... do you see Mexico teaching English in their schools? YES THEY DO ... I can tell you from experience because I attended their schools for various years. They have English classes .... !
I also attended schools in Brazil and Italy through TWU Student Exchange.
2nd ---- Why do people only talk about Spanish? Why don't you tell all the Koreans and Chinese and Japanese that they can't have their signs in their language either?
Let me also tell you that languages other than English have become critical for survival in a globalized world is very clear. Even Americans are being forced to become bilingual, as seen in the United States where MANY communities now run on both English and Spanish.
The only reason why English is the predominant language in the world is because most Americans are too lazy to learn other languages. They expect everyone else to cater to them. Silly isn't it?
I speak Spanish, English, Italian and Portuguese. That makes me more prepared and better qualified to get good and important jobs.
For all those who say that the ''invaders" did learn the language. I would LOVE to see proof of that.

I like how the USA is "bilingual" according to you, guess you just alienated 20+ languages from other immigrants, well done!
The reason most people in the States are so upset with the Spanish stuff is due to the fact it is just shoved down our throats constantly.
My ancestors came from Norway and Sweden, they were NOT allowed to speak in their Native tongue at home, period. They were told that if you wanted to succeed you MUST learn the language where you live. Shocking, that was in 1899, oh to buy a time machine...
And why didn't we speak Cherokee? Some did, we traded with them. So did the Cherokee, that wanted to trade. Uh oh, looks like some folks understood basic econ better than you in the 1600s.

I hear they are putting an end to the bilingualism because I find it funny that the teachers are teaching the Spanish language badly. Including to the Spanish speaking children. So ENGLISH only is in.
To answer your question the White invaders did learn the language of not only, Cherokee, but Lakota, Shawnee, Apache, and many more. Sign language as well. They assimilated more, and communicated with the Native American Indians better, and more than the Spanish, and Mexicans did. As the latter two did not assimilate or learn the Native Americans languages.

Number 1, the Cherokees were not the only native americans here, so choosing their language over any others would not make sense. Number 2, it was the original settlers that developed and colonized the land. And it was they who made the laws, including the decision that this would be an English speaking country. It has been that way since America was founded. I wasn't born in America with a choice on what language I wanted to speak. I was born in America with the English language as the country's language of record.
They came here of their own free will, they can choose to either assimilate or go back home. You can't have your cake and eat it too. They can't say they want to come to America because we have so much to offer and not embrace our customs as well. You don't get to pick and choose what you will accept about our country.

Because they didn't pay enough taxes to cover our "Cherokee-as-a-Second-Language" classes.
Stupid. Business around the world is conducted predominantly in ENGLISH, not spanish. Get a clue, and a grip while you're at it.
EDIT: So are you saying that mexicans are coming here with the intent to conquer us? But I thought they just wanted a better life (yeah right).
Why are YOU so worried about Spanish? You should be ordering everyone to speak Cherokee.

Let's see. Because there were more white invaders than Cherokees. So that makes the Cherokees the minority. Plus, the white invaders didn't have intentions on assimilating with the natives. So they didn't really care.
