I don't have it on my right hand, and it's kind of painful or at least causing discomfort in my hand. What could this be, and how can it be treated ?

Sounds like a ganglion cyst. There are those who will recommend hitting it with a big book ( like a bible) and that will make it go away temporarily, but it will return. BTW, it hurts to hit yourself with a big book.

If it gets too uncomfortable, may need to be removed by a surgeon

I would see my doctor, we all have as many as ten or twelve cysts of one type or the other, they're not serious until they bother us, like yours. The doctor may be able to take this out right in his office. Both my wife and I have had several of these taken out in the office.
