He surpassed Gates this week. Gates has been the richest man for 10 years.

So much for "poor, backward" Mexico!!

Who cares? His fortune is based on the tenuous business environment in Mexico. A few years back, there was some guy from Thailand who was among the world's richest. Then, the ASEAN crisis hit and he is no longer listed among the top 500. Keep in mind that Mexico is not a bastion of financial stability. Anyway, I am happy for Carlos. Too bad he can't use some of this wealth to help stamp out the corrupt government of Mexico. Maybe it would help end this "make a run for the border" attitude that Mexican's have.

First of all the Mexican journalist who reported this is not the official source and Gates and Buffet are still 1 and 2 respectively for now. Dont accept everything as correct on Wikipedia either. I use it too, but not as a sole source.

If it is in fact true, then I say that's great!!

He must have it all though because many poor Mexicans come here in groves to provide a better life for their families and I don't blame them for wanting to do better than they can in a poor nation like Mexico.

Then he should take his people that are here illegally home and provide them with decent wages, don't you think? They are here at will, being exploited because their own motherland can't take care of them or provide laws to ensure they get decent pay. What is up with Mexico? And why doesn't this guy do something about that?

Well, then Carlos Helu should be president of Mexico. Obviously he knows how to make some moolah. He could fix Mexico's economy and then we wouldn't have to freak out about immigration anymore.

Bill Gates donates MILLIONS of dollars every day to various charities. I don't see Carlos doing that.

You do know that has not been backed by anyone but that one banking company.

You do know that
MEXICO:
GDP - per capita (PPP):
Definition Field Listing Rank Order
$10,700 (2006 est.)

UNITED STATES
GDP - per capita (PPP):
Definition Field Listing Rank Order
$44,000 (2006 est.)

Mexico's economy is down the shoot: you clearly haven't been lately.

O yeah and check out the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation: his charity and once he dies he will donate most of his wealth to his charity.

You're an idiot

So what? One man who built his fortune on a monopoly and with the help of a corrupt government does not define the entire country.

What is your point? Wait, right, there is not a point to your question. In this country, there are many that are poverty stricken and will remain poverty stricken and on welfare (and not the illegal immigrants). I don't see the many millionaire in this nation doing much for their poor and ghetto either. Carlos Slim actually contributes to education and the economy by generating work and through direct donations. He can't change the political structure not the corruption, use your common sense.
