He had 700 wives and 300 concubines.

"As he grew older he spent more of his time among his favorites. The idle king living among these idle women, for 1,000 women, with all their idle and mischievous attendants, filled the palaces and pleasure-houses which he had built (1 Kings 11:3), learned first to tolerate and then to imitate their heathenish ways."

I don't think the story of Solomon and his wives is an entirely true story, because it is well documented the Egyptian Pharaohs of that time would have never let anyone take a wife away from Egypt. They considered themselves superior to any non Egyptians That would have also meant Solomon's kids might have had a claim to the throne of Egypt, which was not tolerable to the greatest empire of that time.

Solomon began to disregard God’s law. We read: “And King Solomon himself loved many foreign wives along with the daughter of Pharaoh, Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian and Hittite women, from the nations of whom Jehovah had said to the sons of Israel: ‘You must not go in among them, and they themselves should not come in among you; truly they will incline your heart to follow their gods.’ It was to them that Solomon clung to love them. And he came to have seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives gradually inclined his heart. And it came about in the time of Solomon’s growing old that his wives themselves had inclined his heart to follow other gods; and his heart did not prove to be complete with Jehovah his God like the heart of David his father.

He had 700 wives... (political marriages)

Yes, his many wives led to his downfall, b/c they brought in their pagan gods... and turned his head and his kids' hearts from the true God....

So, even the wisest man alive made some poor choices!
