well if you want a golden retreiver you need running room and most like water, they are good with kids and very loving
border collies a little more hyper needs a lot of exercise and needs rules, has lots of brains, more brushing
also it depends what yo want and what you are going to do with it, borders are good on farms with lots of room to run
retreivers usually enjoy water and retreiving go figure, both have long hair and i think collies have a wonderful bark. hope that helps

I have a 3 year old Golden Retriever and a 1 year old Border Collie so I know how hard this decision will be. Both breeds love to be with people, play just about anything, and are very smart so you will get a great dog with either breed.

those two dogs are slightly different but some of the requirements are the same: 1. do you have a large yard or someplace you can let the dog do some serious exercise?
2. do you have the time to do the above?
Border collies are the better of the two dogs in my opinion, but also are "herding" dogs. that means if you have cats, kids, or other animals the dog will try to keep them in the yard, or move them about.
Both types of dogs like the water, and are good swimmers. I think the Border collie is a bit more active and more of a high energy dog.
Both types of dogs will defend you but the Border collie may be a bit more aggressive in that respect.
Both types of dogs need and will enjoy obedience training.

Both are nice breeds. Active, bright, easily trained. But......a Border Collie is a very extreme dog and can easily get bored and drive you batty! Unless you have a LOT of time you can devote to its' needs, and like to run a lot, go to parks and throw balls, want to get into herding or agility...
I'd say get a Golden. They will need a lot of exercise to be happy and healthy too, but generally not near what a BC needs. Also, be aware of the kennel you get a Golden from. A "field bred" (meaning bred to hunt) will likely need a lot more exercise than a "companion/conformation bred" dog. Did you read Marley and Me? ;-)
I have a BC, and LOVE her! But, I am home all day, live on 180 acres and do agility and have taken her out herding..and play ball in the house every night at 9:30 p.m.
I know there are too many people who have gotten BCs and give them up to rescue or pounds because they just weren't thinking. Of course, a lot of people don't "think" before they get a dog.
Several agility students and friends I know have Goldens....active, fun, but just not intense.

Goldens are awesome, but they are so popular that they've been overbred lately. Because of that, they tend to have a lot of health problems. If you choose a Golden, remember to either adopt one (since there are so many homeless ones- look on petfinder.com) or choose your breeder carefully to make sure the parents don't have a slew of health problems.
Border collies are great, that's the dog I would choose! They are very smart, but they are active, too (just like Goldens). Either breed you choose will be extremely active and need lots of exercise.

Both of these breeds need lots of room to run. If you have a big fenced in area, either would be fine.
Do you have kids? If you do, you probably should pick the Golden Retriever.
Will you have time to play with these very, very active dogs? If not, choose another breed. Maybe a beagle..
*all these things determine what breed you need*

The first 2 breeds that you simply point out would require an colossal quantity of grooming...You cannot move improper with a Golden, even a deficient great Golden will generally tend to have a well temperment however they may be able to develop very huge... My recommendation to you ? Instead of choosing a distinct breed, why no longer move all the way down to the refuge ? With all of the dwelling forclosures there are, actually, two times as many puppies on the refuge wanting properties and such a lot shall be positioned to sleep since folks watching for a brand new puppy wish one from a breeder and no longer a rescue puppy... Please a minimum of have a seem on the refuge puppies, o.okay. ?

i own 2 border collies and will not have another breed. If you choose a border collie know that they are a working class dog and you must give them a task and play every day with them.if they get bored they will tear up things to entertain themselves you must have a fenced yard for either breed cause a house is not the place all day if you work.My male border collie we have had for many years,he plays basket ball, when he was younger that's all he wanted to do he would do any trick just to play basketball, you could teach him a trick every day if you want to they are very very smart dogs, and good with people, very nice temperament, and listens better than kids!!all they live for is to please the owner, and to play or work, they are by far the better dog...they are bread for intelligence not for looks that's why they all do not look alike.great breed!!

it depends on what you want from it/ what kind of attention you can give it. the border collie will need lots of attention and exercise because they are herding dogs. the golden retriever will be more laid back.
