Which is better for losing weight? I feel like with bike riding, although it does feel more strenuous, it is just sitting on your butt and moving your legs... so it wouldn't work out the hips or butt area. Am I horribly misinformed?

Jogging uses more muscle groups, thus expending more energy. Biking uses less muscle groups, but allows you to sustain the exercises longer, thus expending more energy. Confused? If you want to use both exercises you will be mixing up your routine and not getting so bored. Ultimately, you want to perform either biking or jogging at a low intensity (don't go all out). It is all about the time you perfom the activities (the longer the better). The lower the intensity, the more your body will burn the fat for energy (it takes longer to break down). A quicker workout requires quick energy (carbohydrates). Also, the more energy expenditure = weight loss (just limit caloric intake).

If I had to choose either or, I would say low intensity jogging before you have a meal. Sustain at least 15 minutes. If you have to walk pump your arms as well to increase energy expenditure. Good luck!!!

Hi: First of all both running and biking are a great way to lose wight and tone up your legs and upper body. Some people bike because they cannot take the constant pounding that their knees or other lower body parts will endure. With biking you are not increasing your chances of injury as you would in running. Yes, you will lose weight and build muscle in both you butt and legs from biking. Have you ever saw those bike racing guys on TV or in your city? There legs are very muscular and they are lean. Check out the Tour De France on the VS cable channel starting this weekend. By the way, if it feels strenuous when you are biking shift down to a lower gear where it is comfortable. As time goes on you will be able to push yourself more.

Jogging or running is also a great way of exercise. When you run you have to use both the upper and lower body. So you will see more changes in your upper body then you would if you just did biking. If you are not prone to injury running is good. Just be sure that you invest in a good pair of running shoes. When you bike you can cover more distance i.e. see more sights then you can when you run.

Want the best of both worlds? Incorporate both running and biking into your fitness routine. You will then be sure to reach the goals you set for yourself. Also, go to your local bookstore and check out the running and biking magizines. You can get some really good information from them. Remember, consistantcy is the key to success. Take care

I ride my bike almost every day for a couple of miles, and I'm convinced that jogging is more strenuous than bike riding. I think bike riding, at least the way I do it, is good for the butt and probably the hips though. I say that because I frequently get off the seat, especially when starting from a complete stop or slowing down. It isn't as good as, say, lunges or something, but it's decent. Bicycling is more of an endurance activity, I think. Good night!

you can burn the same calories doing either one its just a matter of how fast you jog or run and how much you push yourself. I would recommend riding as it is less likely to cause you any damage to your knees. Jogging is not really worth it when you consider the damage you do to yourself... I you go the jogging route you might just consider walking at a fast pace.

In the end its more a matter of which you enjoy and will actually do. If you do decide to ride then you need to push yourself and not just ride slowly or you won't burn much at all.... that's the one problem with riding, you can coast when you ride and ride too slow to actually do much good.

Jogging is better for losing weight because it gives you a full body work out to where bike riding only works out your legs. Good Luck!!!

With due respect to suzanne d with the Exercise Science degree source as the "best answer" her post is logical but almost entirely incorrect. It is an established scientifically measured fact that vigorous cycling is 200% more efficient than running. My personal experience bears this out. High intensity interval training is the fastest way to build muscle and cardio fitness and cycling has full body benefits. Sprints and recovery, hill climbing and recovery and "going cardio" while still peddling keeps the workout going continuously. You can run so hard you have to stop, bent over and huffing and puffing until you can go again. Add the fact you are working a machine which allows mechanical advantage you can keep a constant cadence while speed and effort vary to maintain a high level of of energy expenditure. You work lower body for sure, plus core and lower back as well as upper body and arms. Add the mass of the bike and you are in essence carrying additional weight. The equivalent of 20 minutes of high intensity work on a bike takes about 40 minutes on your feet. Cycling is a whole lot more fun with high speed banked turns and the cooling effect of the wind resistance. Longer workouts are not a good idea either. Extended workouts produce free radicals which damage your body and over training is a known issue of diminishing returns. Low intensity workouts are a waste of time. Your body will respond to vigorous workouts and will become more efficient in burning fat as fuel as you improve. If you want to lose weight do not eat carbs for fuel you will only train your body to use ready carbs and 'forget' how to switch over to burning fat stores. Training while fasting is a quick way for your body to force itself into fat burning mode. I personally hydrate before during and after my ride and consume 2 tablespoons of unrefined coconut oil before I take off. 20-30 grams of Protein within 30 minutes afterwards. Fat does not make you fat. Carbohydrates are converted to a sugar which in excess triggers the insulin response. Insulin is the "fat storage hormone". Medical 'fact' told us over 30 years ago we needed to eat more carbs and less fat. We now are seeing obesity everywhere! The 'fact' is this was not the 'truth'! I wonder how many degreed individuals were taught nonsense like this over the years? Now consider the fact the pounding your joints get with jogging is actually worse than when running. As for walking, well, it is good for you and is low intensity, but who has 8 hours to go for a walk every day? Cycling not only allows you to keep the intensity of the workout at upper levels for the majority of the time involved it produces far more endorphins which makes you feel good for days after - which encourages you to 'hit it again'. Cycling trumps jogging in every way hands down. Not only is this a fact it is the truth.

People who plan their weekly meals tend to be more successful at losing weight than people that don’t. Plan your dishes to add in healthy carbs such as fairly sweet potato and wholegrain pasta, greens and lean proteins, buy the many ingredients in advance and don’t be tempted to nibble on out or order in.

Eat muesli two hours before training to boost fat burning as you train. Slow to digest, muesli takes longer to acquire through your system, so is less oftimes be turned into fat and still offers you a good energy boost.
