I had a root canal, then the dentist informs me I need a cap.
I didn't realize they grind the tooth down SO much in order to place the cap on. Well, my cap kept falling off, so I said to myself, forget it. So now I've gone about 5 months w/ this bare, ground down tooth. What is going to happen? Will the tooth get cavities? Will it crumble? Will I need to get it pulled? I'm embarrassed to go back to the dentist. HELP!

Go back now!!!

don't be embarassed, the dentists work is partially at fault too -- give them a chance to correct it.

I had a cap fall off, and even though it was only off for about a month, my other teeth had begun shifting to compensate.

Letting it go can restult in cavities, infections, abcesses and pain that you won't believe. Better to make the appointment and get it fixed than end up having other teeth pulled, or end up with a need for oral surgery. Its a pain in the jaw, the a** AND the wallet!

HELLO LINDA,

LET ME FIRST EXPLAIN A BIT AS TO WHAT HAPPENS TO A TOOTH THAT HAD A ROOT CANAL.
WHEN THE ROOT CANAL IS DONE, THE SMALL BLOOD VESSELS AND NERVE ARE ALL REMOVED.
THESE ARE NECESSARY TO KEEP THE TOOTH MOIST FROM WITHIN.
WHAT THEN HAPPENS IS THAT THE TOOTH BEGINS TO DRY AND BECOME BRITTLE. THE WRONG BITE AT THE WRONG TIME CAN CAUSE A BREAK IN THE TOOTH. THIS IS THE REASON WHY A CROWN IS RECOMMENDED AFTERWARD.
IF THE TOOTH IS NOT PROPERLY GROUND FOR THE CROWN, THE CAP OR CROWN CAN COME OFF EASILY.
5 MONTHS WILL MEAN THAT THE TOOTH NEEDS TO BE RE-GROUND FOR A NEW CROWN, AS THIS PRESENT SHAPE WON'T BE ADEQUATE.
ULTIMATELY THE TOOTH WILL EVENTUALLY CRUMBLE W/O A CROWN.
MUCH DEPENDS ON THE VALUE YOU PUT ON THIS TOOTH. EXTRACTION IS AN ALTERNATIVE, BUT THE MISSING TOOTH NOW HAS TO BE REPLACED BY A BRIDGE.
THIS MEANS THAT THE TEETH TO EITHER SIDE OF THE EXTRACTED TOOTH NEED TO ALSO BE GROUND FOR A BRIDGE.
ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE IS AN IMPLANT. INSURANCE DOES NOT PAY FOR THIS.
THERE IS NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OR EMBARRASSED ABOUT. THIS IS YOUR MOUTH, AND YOU ARE THE BOSS. JUST MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION. GOOD LUCK.

The tooth can and will get cavities or even crumble. Go to the dentist! It doesn't have to be the same dentist.

If you don't trust that dentist's quality of work, ask your family members or friends to refer you to a dentist they trust.

You really should not leave a grinded-down tooth exposed like that. It will continue to decay and crumble if not covered up with a cap.

For what you had to pay to have the root canal and cap done they need to fix it until it fits right! Those things are ridiculously expensive and you should not have to pay another dentist to fix what the other messed up.

really, as emmbarrasing as it may seem to you, you really should go to back to the dentist. it may be embarrasing, but its better than possibly having no tooth at all.
