took a three hours drive home on Easter Day and noticed that many people were visiting those crosses that one sees on the highway that signified that someone here has died of a car accdent. Why were the people there and not at the cemetary? I'm not of the Christian faith so would like someone to politely explain this to me.

The persons those crosses memorialize aren't actually buried there. Some people put crosses near the place where a loved one was killed in an accident because that's the place where his/her soul left the body. It's a cultural custom, mostly.

It's a respect thing, both for family and friends, and those less close to the individual. Both Christians and non-Christians do it, but here we tend not to have white crosses put up.

Also not everyone is comfortable in a cemetary/knows where the person was buried, that can also contribute. However they may choose to go to both.

I don't think it's a Christian thing at all. I think it's possibly cultural and caught on to other cultures. I don't pretend to understand this any more than I understand anyone's need to visit a plot in a cemetery. It's not one of my family's traditions to do so, and I really don't know where the tradition comes from or why people follow it. But then, if you feel a stronger connection to those who have gone before by visiting their grave or the site of their death, then far be me from it to ridicule.

Some people feel closer to the deceased if they go to the scene of their death. It also helps in the grieving process.

That seems strange to me, too. Why dwell on tragedies?
