if your computer is old enough that it was built running ME, Xp is probably not your best choice. If you want to stay with windows, an old copy of windows 2000 would be a better option, it has lower system requirements and will run faster on an older machine.
If you aren't tied to the hip with windows, I would suggest a linux distrubution , either ubuntu, or freespire. freespire is better for beginners, in my opinion, because you can run it without and install new software without ever having to learn cryptic commands in a command line, it's all point and click like windows. It also supports mp3 and video files after the install, every other linux version won't, you have to download support later. The linux geeks out there will point you to ubuntu.

i forgot to mention the best part..it's free!

That really depends on what you are looking for.
If you want the windows experience and all the programs etc that go with it, XP would be your best choice. Vista just has too many downsides to be worth it.
If you are looking for something cheap, and easy to use Apple's OS/10 is only $129 and is good for people who aren't really good at using computers and want things to just be simple instead of customizeable.
If you are look for really cheap, you could go with a linux distribution which are generally free. Ubuntu has graphics that put vista to shame, and most free software is designed with linux in mind, but it i s much more complicated to use than windows.

Purchase a MAC! I always owned PC's. Recently instead of upgrading to a newer PC I decided to take a chance on a MAC. I purchased a MAC Book Pro and it was worth every penny and more. It only took a few days of playing around to learn the basics of using the MAC. I use it for work and it completely blows away any other computer I have ever used. It may take a while to learn all the ins and outs of all the programs but it is well worth it. After owning a MAC, I dont understand why more people dont.

i have xp and vista, if you choose vista i would get vista premium, vista premium has everything ultimate has. it has more apps than vista basic. i would not get vista ultimate because it will cost you about 100 dollars more just for a few extras like one game and stuff you dont need. vista has great apps but is really slow compared to xp. if you are using this computer for work i would recommend xp which has fewer distractions. but if your getting a new computer i would wait a year because microsoft is releasing a service pack for vista and might release sp3 for xp.

Get a new computer, as any computer running ME is made slow.
Get one with 1GB of RAM, 120+GB HD, and Intel Core (2) Duo. Use XP. Vista is terrible...
