im in the process of losing weight and toning up. my problem is that i have a good amount of muscle under my unwanted fat. i guess what im afraid of is that when i lose the weight and begin to tone up that my muscles will just be too big. im just wondering i make those muscles lean or are they just going to be big just due to the fact that its just how im built? im 5'3 with a medium frame but i just dont want to be bulky. how can i make them leaner?

Muscles don't get leaner - cut down on the carbohydrates and sugars to reduce fat build-up, then your muscles will have more definition. Don't forget the exercise !

As other have said, don't worry about.
If you're at 10-12% bodyfat and they're huge...that would be something.
If you've been overweight for a long time, the fat can be within and under/around the muscle tissue, and will take much longer for the fat to be burned out.
Remember, even when you lose 40, 50, 60lbs + the fat cells are still there; they've just shrunk.

Well to start with, toning up is a combination of losing weight and gaining muscle. Are you sure that the muscles are actually that big? You might be suprised, more often than not when large losses of weight take place, having larger muscles is helpful in preventing the excess skin from sagging etc.
If your really worried the only way to decrease muscle size is to use it less, and stop feeding it its favourite food, protein.

Hmmm . . . well, it's possible that you are overestimating your muscles' sizes because they are under a layer of fat. Also, as your body weight reduces, your muscles will probably shrink a bit to match the weight they are forced to move. Especially if the exercises you've been doing are bodyweight exercises. Don't worry about it too much until you lose the fat. Good night!

Yoga, and pilates make the muscles longer and leaner looking instead of bulky. These are great excercizes for woman (and men) and they help you to be in balance.

To be lean, you have got to eat lean. A can of tuna has little fat, a hundred and fifty calories and 33grams of protein per can. Grocery retailers promote large cartons of egg whites (at the least they do within the States) and i'm partial to vegetarian refried beans out of a can. It can be got fiber, 300 cals per can and minimal carbs and first rate protein phases....And no fat. I also like raw tofu and lean cottage cheese. There and you will not ruin the financial institution.

It sounds like your size will dictate how big your muscles are going to be, plus you are female so we don't develop overly big muscles, anyways......
Unless you really train to make your muscles huge, you won't get that way.
Keep doing conditioning, like bicycles and jogging/running to keep your muscles lean, or stairsteppers, that is popular in my gym. Nothing beats running actual miles on the earth, though, treadmills do great, don't get me wrong, but running on an actual surface is so much better for you.
Good luck and congrats for choosing a healthy lifestyle.....Your body thanks you for that..... :-)
