(josh 2:9) the interpretors dictionary of the bible says "there is considerable evidence that in the postexilic period, many foreigners were attracted to the religion of the jews. however, by the first century C.E. a superstition about gods name had developed. eventually not only did the jewish nation stop using gods name openly but some even forbade pronouncing it at all. if you claim you know god and dont use his name then somethings wrong. what person you can call a friend do you not know their name?

Names of God

The names or titles given to God in the Bible reveal much about His characteristics - who He is, what He is like, and what He does. When the Bible uses the phrase the ``name of God" or ``in the name of the Lord" it refers to His total person - all that He is. And God's name is excellent and majestic. (Psalm 8: 1)
Elohim (God) means ``might or strong one"; it denotes the power and pre-eminence of God and is especially used in relationship to creation and strength. (Genesis 1: 1; Psalm 68: 1)
Adonai (Lord) means ``master, sovereign ruler or Lord" and generally denotes the authority and position of God. (Psalm 68: 32; Isaiah 6: 8-11)
Yahweh or Jehovah (Lord) means most likely the self-existent one (I am who I am or Iam the One who is) and denotes God's personal name and His eternality. It is often used in relationship to God as redeemer and covenant keeper. Yahweh is the most common name for God in the Old Testament. God's personal name was so sacred to most Jews that they feared to write or say it lest they misused it and usually substituted Adonai for Yahweh. Jehovah is an English word created from the other two to stand for God's personal name. (Genesis 2:4; Exodus 3:14; Psalm 68:14)
El Shaddai means ``God Almighty" and pictures God as the all powerful source of blessing and comfort. (Genesis 17:1; Exodus 6:3; Psalm 68:14)
El Elyon means ``God most High" and pictures God's strength and sovereignty. (Genesis 14:18; Psalm 9:2)
El Roi means ``God who sees" and denotes God's personal care and presence (Genesis 16:13)
El Olam means ``Everlasting and Eternal God" and pictures God's eternality and infinite strength. (Genesis 21:33; Isaiah 40:28)

The following are the main Old Testament Yahweh/Jehovah compound names:
Yahweh Jireh means the ``Lord provides" and was used by Abraham when God provided a sacrificial lamb instead of Isaac. (Genesis 22:14)
Yahweh Sabbaoth means the ``Lord of hosts" (hosts is sometimes translated almighty or army) and pictures God as the commander of the heavenly armies. (Joshua 5:14; I Samuel 1:3; Psalm 24:10)
Yahweh Rophe (or Rapha) means the ``Lord who heals" and denotes the physical and spiritual healing power of God. (Exodus 15:26)
Yahweh Shalom means the ``Lord is peace" and denotes the lack of tension, conflict and strife in God. (Judges 6:24)
Yehweh Nissi means the ``Lord is my banner" and signifies that the battle is the Lord's. (Exodus 17:15)
Yahweh Tsidkenu means the ``Lord our righteousness" and signifies God as the only source of true righteousness. (Jeremiah 23:6)
Yahweh Maccaddeschcem means the ``Lord our sanctifier" (or the Lord who makes you holy) and signifies that God is the one who sets people apart and makes them holy. (Exodus 31:13; Leviticus 20:8)
Yahweh Raah (rohi) means the ``Lord our Shepherd" and denotes God's loving care, protection and provision for His people. (Psalm 23:1)

It's funny how some people will say his name is the "Lord" or "God" or "Father". Those words are titles, not names. It would be like calling me girl. How would you know I was a "special" girl, if you did not use my name?

I had read that the name may have been kept secret because the Israelites did not want the Pagan nations to know the name so that they would not use it in vain.

Wow, it's interesting to see that the misapplication of "taking his name" still holds true 2day.

By that logic, it would seem that God Almighty would rather be referred to by his title (God) than have a slight mispronunciation of his personal Name taken in vain by the common use by the people. That's rather absurd.

God's personal name comes from the imperfect tense of the Hebrew verb hawah, which means to become. It basically means "he causes to become", which is rather fitting of our sovereign because he is able to do and become whatever is necessary in order to accomplish his purposes.

Many people respond by saying that he has many names (God, Jehovah, Almighty, Sovereign Lord, etc.) but when you look closely, all of these are mere titles. You very easily could apply at least some of these titles (in lesser contexts obviously) to humans or angels. The name that our Father has chosen for himself is unique and it distinguishes Him from any other god, true or false.

YHWH (perhaps Yahweh?)
transliterated
JHVH (perhaps Jehovah?)
What more is there to say???

God's name, given to Moses in the Exodus account, is YHWH (the Hebrew letters). This name was considered sacred, and often the vowels of another of God's names, adonai, were added to YHWH, making Yahowah, which has now been somewhat altered to Jehovah. However, the key thing to note in this little fact is that God has many names, and is referred to them by all of them. When you talk to your Dad, do you call him by his first name, or do you call him Dad, or Daddy? Same here. Usually when I talk to God I want to talk to my Heavenly Father, and I call Him Father. Sometimes, I just want to talk to my God, and then I will, from time to time, call Him either YHWH or Jehovah. Sometimes, when I'm really hurting, I just call out to "My God!" as Christ did on the cross. I go to Him as what I need Him to be for me at the time I go to Him.

I do. It is Jesus. ncovercomers@yahoo.com

Jesus inherited the name of the Father, according to Hebr. 1:4. All of us have to carry the name of the Father, or we are not his, even Jesus himself. There is no name above that name. God puts his name on his house.

Try Psalms 138:2 His word is magnified above all his name.

Not a day goes buy when the Lord Jesus Christ, the name above all names, is not in my heart and on my lips or both.

And to that name, one day soon, every knee shall bow, of things in earth and things in heaven, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

many people dont use because they dont know about it since in some Bibles its only mentioned a few times

others dont use it because they think its disrespectful when its actually not. Jehovah wants us to call him by his name because God isnt enough you could be reffering to the Devil since he is a god too

His name is sacred... He has commanded us not to take His name in vain... He deserves and should get that respect from us all, but I know it doesn't always happen... There are ways to address Him without using His name in vain... He is our Heavenly Father and that is a very comfortable and acceptable way to talk to Him! Just try it ok!

Why do you bother with the Name of God, should you not know the Word of God. Our Father who art in heaven and Word of God.

.
I think the problem arises where individuals represent to others that Gods personnel name is....knowing that it is not.

Making a statement of fact to others that Gods name is such with full knowledge that it is not correct would classify such statement of fact as what.
