Any person who has not been proved guilty by the court is supposed to be innocent. Based on this principle the police cannot expose any suspect or accused to general public if such a person doesn’t want his or her identity publicly exposed. The second reason behind this is that any suspect or accused has to be given full protection from any attack on his or her person by any one that will ultimately affect the process of justice; any public identification of such a person may allow such physical attack in future. These are the major reason for not exposing identities of criminal suspects thus protecting their legal & constitutional right.

It is not the job of the police to reveal or force the relevation of a suspects identity, merely to arrest, detain and transport for prosecution.

If the guy wears a jacket on his head they have no reason to care less.

Those folks might not be guilty and if I was charged with a crime and did not expect to be found guilty, I wouldn't want everyone to see my face on tv and think I committed a crime. Most often though they do it to prevent embarrasment to their families who otherwise might first learn of the arrest on tv or from neighbors who saw your face on the 6 pm news. A more interesting question is why the press takes tv cameras to film someone who is charged but may not be guilty of a crime and why we all don't have a problem w/ that!

Because, if I reach up and pull your hands from your face, or force you to face the cameras, or yank your coat from your head, I have committed Battery or at least excessive force.

I may ONLY use the necessary force to arrest you and get you into the jail. Anything else is excessive.

Think real hard and see if you remember the phrase "innocent until proven guilty". They are suspects, not convicts.

They are suspects and have not been convicted yet. If you were arrested by mistake, would you want your face all over the evening news?

Their names are published in the newspaper as well as TV so we know who they are. The head covering doesn't bother me and its not illegal.
