If that should happen, then we should also tax smokers, anorexics/bullemics, diabetics, cancer victims, etc. Is that what you want?

No I don't think so, but I do believe that they should pay for the whole space they may take up. Riding in a plane for 12 hours to my new home is uncomfortable enough, but when someone who may be overweight allows parts of their body to fall into the $1000 space I paid for than they should have to pay more. I do not have anything against them, but I do have rights too and I should be able to feel comfortable and enjoy the space I paid a lot of money for without having to worry about another persons body taking over my seat also.

No.

While most of the overweight people overeat and do not exercise, not all overweight patients cause their own weight problem. Some people have weight gain for medical reasons. Thyroid diseases, hormonal diseases, metabolic syndrome, certain forms of cancer, and many medication can cause significant weight gain. They should not be penalized for their weight problem.

Instead, there should be a tax relief for people who are healthy and put effort into their health - like eating healthy, exercising regularly, etc. Perhaps the government should grant some tax credit for those who goes to see their doctors regularly and get clean bill of health. Another way to do it is to levy some tax on the "unhealthy" food industry - fast food, desserts (ie Starbuck and Smoothie places). While we are at it, also put more tax on alcohol and tobacco industry as well, if you want to make the population healthy.

A healthy population will be cheaper for the government to take care of, as a whole.

This is not a solution to anything. Singling out one people and attempting to solve a complex societal problem like obesity in this fashion as you suggest causes even more problems.

And anyway, this is a bigoted attitude to have if you really are sincere in your question, so I would say change your way of thinking.

If you want to cure society from any of the problems you may see, you must look at the root cause of the issue. If you cut a weed at the stem, it will just continue to grow. If you cut at its root, it will die.

Well, how would you propose determining who is overweight? If you use weight or BMI, then many lean bodybuilders would fall into this group. Here is some related info:
http://www.spartafit.com/articles/measuring%20body%20composition.php

If you use percentage body fat, then the costs of measuring every resident of the country would grossly outweigh any revenue that you can ever hope to collect.

The bottom line is that this question ranks very high on the stupidity scale.

Why would you even ask this question? That is just like saying that overweight people aren't as good as fit people. You just have no respect for anyone. Get a life.

How does an overweight person bother you? Tax smokers!
They're selfish and affect the air!!

For what purpose? What would that achieve? Clearly you have never struggled with being overweight and I don't wish that on you. It can be very difficult.

I assume that you are just asking this question to start and interesting and controversial dialogue and not too be a mean person.

Well considering we don't sell fat people (nor does anyone want to buy one...)

But I like what you're thinking. Putting a bit more of a money burden on those who are overweight. An economic incentive for them to lose weight.

We should put pressure on them to lose weight before taxing them. Some just need help to lose.
