I find July 4th kind of disturbing because being in my house and hearing fireworks off in the distance makes me think about how terrifying it must be to live in a war zone (especially for kids).

I feel you SOOOOO much on this tonight. We live in a spot where we can see two huge fireworks shows from our backyard. When I say huge I mean BOOM BOOM *window shaking* BOOM. The last two years my son was 1 & 2. The fireworks were not a pleasant experience at all because he was VERY VERY scared and all I could think about were children in war torn countries who had to hear BOOM BOOM for real. This year he is 3 and looking forward to the visual part more- he is old enough to understand that it won't hurt him. And yes, I like looking at the fireworks. But as far as celebrating the actual holiday- I don't think we should be celebrating anything until this unjust war has ended.

It's funny...I have a friend that lives in this really densely packed 'hood where kids are always out playing in the next yard, even (now, with school out) after dark and such. I go there to feel more connected, she comes here to get away from it all. When I go there, she shuts the windows, when she comes here we open them up. Different strokes for different folks. I think kids get used to the fireworks noise - especially if it's something they can engage in, rather than some noisome temptation they can hear but never touch or see. Dogs, though...they never get anything from it.

Well I love the 4th of July but I also never thought of it in the way you described....we've had so much thunder, lightening, and rain here the last two weeks that I'm kind of immune to the sounds now...it has stormed really HARD for the last several nights and normally I don't get that scared, but I've woke up frightened the last three nights. And when I'm frightened of a storm it must really be bad!

You know, I'd never thought of it that way - that could be quite disturbing, actually.

I don't find it that odd, actually, to not like a holiday. It seems that ost holidays seem to obligate us to activities we may not have interest in.

As I get older, I find some holidays like this to be less and less interesting. We won't even be going to see the fireworks this year, because the humidity is too high and both spouse and I have trouble breathing in high humidity.

No. The 4th of July is the day were people get drunk, fireworks go bad, and annoying picnics.

It brings more bad than good (especially the last one).

I did not work today and I had a change to spend time with my daughter, that was great...as great as hanging out whole day with the teenager can be, heh hee.

I hear fireworks, I did not feel like going to see them by the ocean even though I thought about it. Independence is a good thing though. : )

Lots of people dislike the fireworks. I don't like them because my animals are frightened by them. They also cause many fires where I live every year, yet they are still legal outside the city limits.

Not unusual at all. I personally am bored stiff by all the mediocre singers and the jingoistic blather leading up to the fireworks.

It is not odd. You can like what you want. I am sure there are other people that feel the same way you do.

I am not one of them. But I am sure there are some people.
