My nissan maxima 1996 needs a new computer and the mechanic told me if I want I can get it my self a new one and bring it for installation. Any places in Chicagoland? or internet?
Is it safe to buy an used one?

Only the exact computer will do Maxima SE, LE and SL models have different computers. BY Vin number the dealer can have the right computer they rebuild them now you have to pay a core charge or give them your old computer. Now what caused the computer to fail the idle speed control or electronic motor mounts or???? You just cannot plug in a computer to a shorted idle speed control and expect it not to fry a new computer..... Seek a second opinion. Some times A/C water leaks onto the computer and causes it to fail you want to do the windshield and leaves in the a/c box repair to keep it from happening again.
