Cover the grill and close the vents. It will either go out by itself or burn up. Soem grills especially kettle types close off the air well enough it will go out and any un burned charcoal will be useable next time.

Assuming there are no children or animals around that could get hurt, leave the top of the grill open. If you close the top it will only keep the charcoal hot longer. Letting the air hit the charcoal will let it burn out faster and cool down. Never put water on a hot grill. You could burn yourself with the steam it produces and damage the grill.

Let the charcoal burn itself out, and there will be nothing left but a fine coal dust. There is no reason to pour water on it...there is nothing left to burn, but if you feel the need to use the water...then go ahead it will not harm anything.

Throwing cold water on a hot fire is not your safest bet. Cover the grill up and let it burn out. Then you can throw some water on it.

Put the charcoal out with water. Sprinkle at first so as not to distort the metal BBQ. Leave the lid open in tomorrows sun and you can use that charcoal again.

With metal prongs, separate the charcoal brickettes. Then just let it burn itself out, covered. There's no need to use water.
