I want to get an old school tattoo for my dad and I really like the anchor with the banner but someone told me thats for if your dad was in the navy or something. Do you know if that's true?

Here's the picture of the tattoo...

yes , but if that is a connection that is strong between you and your dad go for it. Every tattoo has a meaning behind for that individal person . If it didn`t have a strong meaning for you ,you wouldn`t be asking . Who cares what other people think ,it`s what you feel behind it. Don`t live in a stereo type world be yourself

That is an awesome tattoo and if you like it and it reminds you of your dad go for it. If people ask you later on like why did you get an anchor or if your dad was in the navy then you can go ahead and clear that up for them, but it shouldnt matter what people think its totally up to you and no one else, because you are the one that is going to be going to through all the pain and stuff but if you like it go for it it has its own special meaning to you and your dad. Good Luck!!!!!!

does it really matter what it may mean to other people? tattoos can mean whatever you want them to. there is no special meaning to tattoos that are placed here or there or certain colors that represent certain things. the only style tattoo i can think of that has specific meanings like that is japanese and a traditional anchor doesn't fit that.
so if you want to get an anchor tattoo for your dad then do it. for whatever reason you feel like it is a good way to represent your father then that is the only reason you need to get the tattoo.
good luck.

I think that tattoo is beautiful. Who cares about the Navy.. Nautical Stars and Swallows were for the navy too, but look at how many people have them now.

What a nice way to honor your dad.

It could be for if your dad was in the navy, is a fisherman, likes the ocean...anything like that. It doesn't matter what other people think. It's what the tattoo represents to you.

It can mean whatever you want it to mean, if you want to get an anchor in honour of your father, then do it. I have seahorses tattooed on me, my father was a fisherman when i was growing up, he used to bring home shells for my mom, and seahorses used to come up entangled in the nets, so if he couldnt rescue them before they died, he used to dry them out, get them either gold or silver plated and bring them home for me. Its a pretty obscure reference to my father, as he was so much more than the man who would bring me home pretty things, but he got it straight away, as soon as i came home with my first tattoo, so thats all that matters. As long as you know what it means, and you think he would know, thats the only part you need to worry about.

Generally, yes, anchors are for people who were in the navy.

BUT if this symbol means something special to you, throw tradition to the wind and go for it.

Your dad doesn't have to be in the navy to get that tat. If it reminds you of him then get it.
