The flute, even though it is small, takes more breath to play it than any other wind instrument. Even the tuba requires less air.
The fingering for the flute is fairly simple. The most difficult part of playing it is breathing properly and learning to control your air flow. If your breath control isn't sufficient, you will never get a nice, rich sound even though you may be playing the correct notes.
However, I think that you should try it out. It really is a nice instrument. And because it is in the key of C, you can be accompanied by anyone who might be a piano player for a duet every now and then.
Good luck and enjoy!

I've been playing the flute for about six years now. Go ahead and give it a try. I personally thought that it was a pretty easy instrument to learn. For the first couple days, it may be hard to get a sound out of it, but take heart. Once you learn the fingerings you should have no problem. Enjoy!

Ya gotta want wrap your lips about an elongated object and blow while manipulating fingertips. You won't know what your muse wants till you give it objects to toucth. You could buy a cheap wooden flute for five to ten bucks or whittle one from bamboo. If you can make neautiful noise with that then by sure buy a more pricey model or whittle one out of Koa Wood.

It depends on what you mean by "play".
If you mean "to be able to sorta play well enough to be average for an average high school band", than it is not extremely difficult.
But if you mean "to be able extremely well/master", than yes, it is very difficult.
It is difficult to play any instrument well. It takes years and years and hours and hours of practice to master an instrument.

It's only easy if you don't want to be good. If you want to be good, no instrument is easy. Period. You want to play? Get used to hard work.
Sorry, that sounds really bitchy... I didn't mean it to sound that way!!!

with proper training it can be easy, but if you are learning by yourself, it can be impossible
but compared to other instruments it is very easy to learn.
