Cmos is a trademark of RCA who invented the imager we now generically call CCD or charged coupled device. RCA licensed the CCD technology and Cmos name to a number of business partners. The term cmos is just a marketing item and not a special imager.

3 chips have a better resolution of rich saturated colors, and is desired in any video system, not just HD.

HD requires special handling of the video, including digital monitors and editing software. If you are a real video geek, then that is the way to go. If economy and value mean anything to you then SD, which can still be shot is 16:9 widescreen mode, is the best choice.

a well designed ccd will almost always deliver better results that a cmos. but a cheap cmos usally is better than a cheap ccd.
