I need sugjestions for songs to play on my acoustic guitar at parties for people when I got to college in the fall. I'm looking for anything from the "every rose has its thorn" sing-along songs, to the sappy "panty droppers" like "far away" by nickelback or anything by john mayer. Any sugjestions would be greatly appreciated!

Steve Miller Band- The Joker
Freefallin'- Tom Petty
Last Dance with Mary Jane- Tom Petty
Gangster of Love- Geto Boys (to the tune of Sweet Home Alabama)
Boyz N the Hood- Dynamite Hack
Pearl Snaps- Jason Boland
When I'm Stoned- Jason Boland
Rock and Roll- Cross Canadian Ragweed

Some of these have raunchy lyrics, but they sure are funny when you're drunk at a college party...:)

Whew. A 17 year old guitarist. You know what can lay ahead by the advice so far. Reality check, please. Or, "Check please." Will be the result. You are going to have to pay for the convenience of being served. More certainly lies ahead too. And the next 5-10 years (even a naive outlook) can change in ways of the (more) practical and personal influences. Not just immediate environments as you have been experiencing them now. You have many factors yet to face and to deal with besides what career you may believe will be most 'comfortable' for you. Consider community college or a trade school. There are alternatives, and survival moves you may have to make in the next few years to come. In the meantime as well, having an apprenticeship or association with a music store, entertainment agency or something related you can be comfortable with to either make money and learn more of the craft you think you are going to master in. You still have to be good to even at an almost 'professional' level to come across well enough to even be a member of any group or having to solo for yourself and still not have to have a 'name'. This is survival of the fittest and provides some level of security. All in all, it will wear upon you depending how you are going to deal with what comes at you, and what decisions you will have to make eventually. Be it career, lifestyle, family or personal goals you want to keep alive, there will always be some work, time and patience involved and having to find your levels of contentment, personal success and any contribution you may think that is worthy of yourself.

I don't know how old the movies you've been watching are, but I've been to a lot of college parties and no one was playing the guitar. No one would have been able to hear anyone playing the guitar. Mostly people were running around drunk listening to too-loud rap music.

Looks like the girl below me stole my answer! I was JUST going to suggest Stairway to Heaven; it's a classic. Definitely keep it in mind.

Otherwise? Try "Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day.

Old zeppelin is always good, and a hit with the older crowd. Try some Beck.
