I adopted a rescue chihuahua and would like to know some suggestions for dry food. He has symptoms of allergies? Excess shedding, licking paws, rubbing face in the ground (so a web site said, but this seems also normal dog stuff) Has a lot of clear eye drainage due to blocked tear ducts and I have trouble helping him with this but he rubs it off.

He is a wonderful affectionate pet so I want this 6 yr old to live forever!

Just because a dog food is popular due to advertising doesnt mean it is any good.

The first 2 ingredients are the main ingredients. the rest is junk so if the ingredients start of with corn,.wheat anything other than meat DO NOT BUY IT etc. dont waste your money. the first ingredient should be chicken, beef, or lamb.
Lamb will give dogs excessive gas.
Once you get a good dog food her coat will turn around 100%
Remember what you put in a dog is what comes out.
So a food that requires 4 cups a day + on an average dog , that is how much poo you will get back.
Good foods for an adult dog require only 1-2 cups PER DAY

Me personally I like Diamonds Naturals dog food.

Congrats on adopting a Chihuahua. I have been rescuing them for over 30 years in hopes of finding loving forever homes like yours.

I feed my own 4 Chihuahua's Wellness Super Mix 5 Lamb. One of mine has a problem with allergies (even to chicken), but he's just fine with the Wellness.

Work with your vet to clear up the allergies and I hope you and your new Chi friend will have many happy, healthy years together.

There are many good brands that you should be considering. Anything that you can buy in a supermarket is generally not going to be the best. Go to your local pet store and support them with your purchase. I'll just mention a few excellent foods but this is not an inclusive list. Innova, Canidae, Wellness, Flint River Ranch, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, and quite a few more.

Innova Evo (use the original poultry formula, not the Red Meat formula.). No grains, soy, or byproducts, nothing but meat and potatoes for carbs. Low allergy, and it'll help immensely with skin and coat, and also help keep weight off (foods with a lot of grains add to obesity, which Chis can suffer from).

Good luck!

California Natural is a healthy food for dogs with allergies: http://www.naturapet.com .. there is also Innova and Innova EVO on there too.

Canidae: http://www.canidae.com
Timberwolf Organics: http://www.timberwolforganics.com
Chicken Soup: http://www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com
Sold Gold: http://www.solidgoldhealth.com
Wellness: http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com
Natures Variety: http://www.naturesvariety.com

Stay away from brands like Pedigree, Purina, Kibbles n Bits, Beneful, IAMS.. and things like that. They are full of fillers, by products, corn, soy and wheat and arent very nutritional for your dog.

Thanks for adopting!

If you want to see instant improvement, then I'd switch to a raw prey model diet. You can read 2 books written by a vet at www.rawmeatybones.com.

Or, if you absolutely can't stomach feeding your dog raw... then try using canned/wet and dry food by a great brand that is grain free like Evo.

Good luck.
