If you are holding a scalpel tightly then you are holding it wrong.

Everybody gets the shakes at least once in surgery. If you don't care enough that you are cutting into a live human being that it wouldn't make you shake, the I don't want you operating on anybody.

1) Always eat your breakfast before surgery.
2) If you feel like you are going to shake do the following
-make sure you have a firm grip on the scalpel with the handle along the side of your thumb
- hold it as tight as you would hug your mother, not as tight as you would hug you significant other
-keep your elbow against your ribs
-clench your butt-cheeks like you have to go really bad.

It gets easier the more you do it and eventually you won't have to follow all the special measures I told you above.

Most surgeons have some tremors of the hands. It is rare to have a surgeon with absolutely steady hands. I have a noticable tremor myself and I consider myself a good surgeon (I do liver transplants). There are some great surgeons with fairly pronounced tremors. Being a good surgeon is about knowing what to do and when. You can steady your hands by supporting them on something, often a retractor, your other hand or sometimes an assistants hand while doing extremely fine work.

Don't hold it too tight - it trembles because you put energy into that. Loosen it up and it'll be fine. Surgeons concentrate on every movement they do.

Don't worry about that, everyones hands do that. The only reason a surgeons hands are so steady is because they have confidence in their abilities.
