I just bought it today and was wondering how long do I take it before going to bed? Also they come in 3 mg per pill. I'm 13 with Insomnia. No doctor will help me for some reason, I think my family doctor said that he doesn't want to make me get dependent on a drug (not that I want to be put on drugs).
Thanks for your answers!

Hi nikehoops. A lot of bad advice on here.

Melatonin in small doses is extremely safe. 3 mg doses may be too much. 1 mg is the normally starting dose (and usually is sufficient). Can you break the pills in two? If so, do so. Take one half of a pill one hour before bedtime.

The most common 'side-effect' is an increase in dreaming.

You body naturally produces melatonin at night. The room must be very dark to get adequate melatonin production. Also, adequate sunlight exposure during the day can help to 'prime' your body for melatonin production at night.

I wanted to say more, but my computer just crashed. I will try to send this.

Hi, sweetie. Let me offer you some suggestions:

First, be sure you get some really hard exercise every day early in the day....... walk or jog, go to the gym, play basketball, etc. Secondly, don't take long naps during the day, and have your final meal 4 hours or more before he hit the sack. Sleep in a dark room. And it is okay to have a half a glass of warm milk before going to bed. Some people find reading something not very heavy helps, --- comic books but not school work. A hot shower helps too. and yes, melatonin will help you sleep, but only if all the other stuff is done. When school starts again in September, don't let your homework grind on you.... get it done faithfully every day after school, so you are not trying to sleep with that stuff over your head.

If you eat before going to bed, exercise before going to bed, your room is not quiet, nothing really helps. Just as you have to rather get yourself "up" to face school, you rather have to let your bod relax before hoping to sleep....

Hope this helps.

your brain, at 13, is still developing and if you take an excess amount of melatonin, your pineal gland might stop producing it and make you dependent on this for the rest of your life. Are you sure you have been diagnosed with insomnia? Have you tried doing a hundred push-ups all throughout the day or running to make yourself tired? Try that, exhaust yourself before you become drug dependent.

doctors are licensed to push prescription drugs like benzodiazepams (which definitely you should not take), right now the benzo sleeping pill is at war with melatonin which you can get at heath store without prescription. so naturally no doctors will help you.

remember 2 things. (1) make sure the melatonin is synthetic and not directly from a cow brain to avoid contamination that will gives you side effects, (2) try used it every other day test if you can take it without being addicted

at your age 3mg is a little too high, your natural brain production is 0.5mg. take it 20 min before bedtime. in bed make sure the room is dark and your mind is free from any disturbing thought.

I would stay clear of it at your age because the effects are hard to judge. It can help adults with sleep problems, but it may cause other side effect that are dangerous like heart conditions, breathing, nervousness, etc. Chamomile tea is much safer and it will also cure menstrual cramps (for the female readers). The tea will slowly relax you and give you a restful sleep plus it's yummy with a little lemon and honey.
