the other guy jumps up and fake spikes it to confuse the other teams middle blocker.
since the middle blocker helps both right side and left side block middle blocker has to make the decision on who to block. it's a 50 50 shot that he will choose the wrong one.
leaving the guy who actually spikes it with the chance to only have to go up against one blocker.
hope that makes sense!

Used to confuse the middle blocker and/or make him hesitate on getting to the outside to help block the outside hitter. With this hesitation he either won't make it to help double block, or he will be late, which is just as good. This contains the middle blocker and allows your outside blocker to be able to hit the ball with only 1 blocker instead of 2 therefore giving him more options as to where to hit the ball. If the middle blocker decides to cheat and gamble on going to either the right or left side outside hitters, then the setter will just set the ball to the middle hitter and he'll have an open shot for a kill.

It helps contain the opposing middle blocker. The middle blocker is supposed to block the middle position and help with the right and left sides as well. If you can get the opposing middle to hesitate just a little, they will be late getting outside and your outside hitter will only have one blocker. And when you guess the opposing middle starts cheating to the outside, your middle gets the set and the kill.

I agree with the 1st answer. If you can't figure this one out, you're really not a jock, LOL! It's like when you send your friend to ask a guy if he likes you. The guy is wondering why you sent a dummy in to ask the question for you instead of asking it yourself.

yea, that's called a dummy. that's one of the tactical attacking plays that the team uses to make the opponent's blockers confused. men's and women's volleyball use that a lot.

this way, they will confuse the opposing team to make them think that theyre gonna hit it somewhere so they go for the ball, but really, theyre going to hit it somewhere else. they use this skill to help their team get aces, and eventually help their team win.
