In most places, police officers can and do write parking tickets. However, some places write these tickets more than others. Red light cameras are very controversial. There is debate as to whether or not the do more harm than good, just as there is debate as to their true purpose. We do not need the red light camera system expanding, especially when there's some private company that manages the programs and makes a profit. leading me to wonder how much work they do in order to sell the program to cities as a means to raise revenue for the city and company, not so much to prevent accidents. Most traffic violations cannot be reasonably tracked through a camera system. Also, every camera violation must be reviewed by a police officer to make sure it's actually a violation, so the police are still involved. There's also no reasonable way for a camera offense to either (1) constitute a criminal offense and responsibility that comes with that, and (2) hold the actual violator responsible. Red light camera tickets only go to the registered owner, who may have not been the one driving the vehicle. Police officers making traffic stops serves a greater purpose than simply issuing a ticket or warning. They run a person for warrants or any other information, in addition to possibly detecting crime beyond the traffic offense. Many warrants have been cleared, in addition to many other offenses prevented, because there was a police officer, not a camera, catching an offense. Tim McVeigh, Oklahome City bomber, and Ted Bundy, notorious serial killer that proved very difficult to catch, were both caught by local police officers on a traffic stop. There is no red light camera that would have stopped either of these two, or countless other criminals, like a real, live police officer can.
