My sister's friend just got a parakeet and she said that they can talk. Is that true?

Actually, parakeets (budgerigars) are known to be one of the best talkers in the world!

I have about 20 parakeets(budgies). The ones in my aviary don't talk but the ones i have hand raised talk (i have hand raised 3). They are not that great at remembering the words i teach them but if i say something to them they will sometimes say it back. They didn't talk until they were a few years old though so if you really want one to talk you're going 2 need 2 b prepared 2 wait a while. They are a type of parrot btw:)

Some parakeets can but they have to be taught to talk. The key to teaching a parakeet to talk is to have the parakeet think it's part of the "human flock", and therefore that it needs to communicate with its human friends. If you have a mirror in the cage, or other parakeets, it will see parakeets around it and want to talk like them (i.e. chirp). So step one is to have your young parakeet on its own, surrounded by humans that talk to it.

Males are known for talking, it's not uncommon at all. I had a female at one point that would mimic a squeaky noise in a commercial she liked (her cage was on top of the entertainment center), but otherwise, I've only heard of males talking.
PS parakeets (budgies) are parrots! They are the 2nd smallest member of the parrot family :)

yes parakeets can talk. From what i hear many people say that it is best to train them to talk if you have only one in the cage. That way they are one on one with you and not being distracted by the others presence.

some just naturally do if they hear specific words enuf times . some can be taught to repeat words and phrases. and soe just cant seem to get the hang of it but yes, parakeets can talk.

Yes, it is true. Almost every bird can talk, ecspecially birds that start with a par lik parrot, parakeets can talk its just a matter if they want to talk.
