people? Is there like a general rule of thumb sociologists use as to determine the maximum amount of people that can live in a given area? Like per square mile? I have been wondering why certain countries are more densely populated than others.

I think Israel could do it. Initially, it could be a burden but once everyone gets working and puts money into the economy, then it can only help Israel.

I am British, but during my gap year, some time back, I spent six months in Israel and absolutely loved it. I went back the following summer for another three months, and have been there for several shorter holidays also. I would not definitely rule out a move to Israel, especially because in the UK at present things are going from bad to worse and there is a lot of anti semitism. But if as you say you are 'in love' with the USA, then clearly you are really happy there, which is nice to hear! Moving to a different country is of course a massive step. In an ideal world, I guess being able to have two homes, one in each country, would be rather nice...!

Following Israel's independence, the country was certainly overburdened by the influx of Jews escaping Europe and Arab countries.

Look at the town of Sderot (in the news these days for being under daily missile attacks). It started out as a tent city of Jews from Morocco and Yemen. It took over 20 years to build the town with all the necessary public works, etc.

Jews coming into Israel, from the West or from Asia, are usually hard working and ready to put their energies into building the Jewish national home. It's a long term project.

During 1949-1955 Israel has accepted over 980,000 people (at that time Israel's Jewish population was at 605, 000). So, they did it then and they can do it again. Since the collapse of USSR over 800,000 Russian Jews have immigrated to Israel increasing the Jewish population from 4.6 million to 5.5 million. Israel always prepares for large wave of immigrants. Most Israelis would actually love it if all Jews immigrate there. It will increase the economy for the better. Now, Jews are expecting the French Jewish community into making aliyah for anti-semitism has grown in France beyond believe.

The Negev desert, in the south of Israel contains 60% of Israel's land but a small percentage of the population. There is also room in the Galil (north). Israel has plenty of space to build new cities, towns and settlements for new immigrants.

The immigrants would also improve the economy of the country as they could start businesses, employ people etc.

If all moved at once it would probably cause immediate housing issues. However, in the first 3 years of Israel's existence the population tripled (due to refugees from the Arab countries) and it's still standing, so who knows. The Negev is awfully empty, and if the Jews come with their money it would be enough to fund desalination projects and other things to make it habitable.

Well, it would double the population of Israel, taking the density to about 1600 per sq.mile (about 615/sq.km) although parts of it are pretty barren and most live along the coast. That would put it on a par with Barbados and about half the density of Burmuda. The usual reason for high population density is a mostly urban culture thriving on interaction or a country with a history of high child death rates.

Israel certainly could support a population but it depends on when such an influx where to occur what financial resources Israel would have in order to do it. Regardless it could be done.

Good Luck!!!

I think she'll be able too. Think also what all those people would do for her economy. And about the space - our sages say in the mishna (Avoth) that one of the miracles of Jerusalem was that when all the Jewish pilgrims came on the three holidays Passover, Shavuot and Succot no one said "the space in Jerusalem is not enough for me" (צר לי המקום בירושלים). So if there's room in the heart there's physical space too.

Jewish people! Israel is waiting for you with open arms!

Why would a Jew want to live in israel? They would have to walk down the street shoulder to shoulder with zionists. Not a nice thing.

It is better for jews to live free and happy lives away from israel and their zionist tormentors.
