I hope & I will assume your current dog is neutered.
Have you information on HOW to introduce the two? You don't just bring the baby in the house & set her down for his inspection.
The older dog will go out in the yard & pee on everything that does not move to show the baby he is boss of the territory. That is only natural, even if they are neutered. BUT he should not do it in the house. I have two males & I would not allow it. If the older one tries to lift his leg in the house, you yell, "NO"! And then spray him with the water spray bottle. They really do know they shouldn't do that.
There is no reason for them to lift in the house..........Carry the bottle if needed. He will stop soon.
A female will take over & be the boss in no time. She will tell the old boy where to go & what to do when he gets there. She will also be more protective & a better watch dog.
Males will get along if they are both neutered but I think there is a nice balance in personalities with a male & a female. Two males or two females will fight more too.
As soon as possible get the female spayed or the male neutered. Then no problems.

Marking territory will most likely happen whether the new pup is male or female. My recomendation for the lowest chance at possible issues of jealousy etc.. are to get a female. You don't say whether your dog is nuetered or not.. if not, it is imperative that he be so before she comes into season (heat) or you have her spayed prior to her first season. Also, keep in mind that if she DOES come in season your (hopefully) nuetered male may still attempt to breed her... which will not result in pups but is a bit of a pain.

if you lab is 8 He should be nuetered first. Longevity in males life help if they are nuetered, if he is already neutered. He will Not mark. I suggest with a male Get a female. they become buddies. he'll teach her. Unless you are showing her at AKC confrimation events. Get her spayed at 6 months. Male & Female are best friends. Males will put up with more sassiness from a female. and the females. won't get aggresive with a male. Males only fight for territ6ory but 2 females will fight to the death. Your male if the only dog for along time, will allow a female in allot easier than another male, most older males. won't even bother with a pup or its presence til they are 3 - 4 months. Kind of treat them more like a nuisance at first. Or the reverse, They know it is their own kind, and fall madly in love with them immedialtyl tor slowly once the pup realizes the older dog is NOT a chew toy. they beginto get along and enjoy each other. just takes time, have fun

i prefer female spayed dogs, they seem calmer. also males usually try to protect the territory, females usually try to protect their young or a substitute like your for instance. If your 8yr old dog is not marking now he might not start marking when you get a new pup. He will mark whether its a new female or male.

I would get a female.
Female/Male pairs are easiest while female/female pairs are hardest.
If your dog is neutered the marking shouldn't be a problem. If he is not neutered don't introduce another dog until he is. Unneutered dogs are way more likely to be aggressive towards other dogs.
