If tooth decay just started in the enamel, it can be re-mineralized if you maintain good oral hygiene.

Once it breaches the enamel and into the dentin, one would need a dentist to drill out the decay and fill the tooth. Decay that has reached the dentin is deep, and you cannot fix it yourself.

6 month checkups are important-- Decay will show up on the x-rays and let you catch the cavities while they are still small and easy to repair.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I've had about three VERY small cavities over the years and I managed to get rid of them by myself. When I first see the small black spots I would brush very well after every single thingie I eat. Also, I've heard that raw eggplants and chedder cheese help you get rid of cavities when they first start to form, so I eat them whenever I see a small black spot, even though I almost totally believe that the eggplant and chedder thing is just a myth, but I feel comfortable eating them and believe it actually helps get rid of cavities (my nightmares).
