I have 2 years experience in shoe sales and 3 years experience in merchandising. I just got hired by both companies. Staples is an overnight job at 9.5. Jcpenney is a day job as a shoe sales man but I dont know the pay. Which would be the best choice ?

Your rate of pay is incredibly important...but so is the job you're doing. Merchandiser's have the luxury of not having to deal with the customers as much as the cashiers & sales people do. If you're an overnight merchandiser, you probably won't have to deal with the public at all.

Also, floor staff at department stores are often under pressure to make sales and interact with customers. If your preferences or personality aren't conducive to pitching shoes, or dealing with rejection, than these positions can be very stressful. Merchandisers have a lot less pressure in this arena.

I'd go for staples...try and work your way to a supervisory postion as soon as possible, so you'll have stronger skills and experience to include in future resumes for future jobs.

Does the shoe sales job require that part or all of your salary be based on commission? That could be a negative.

The Staples job would be on third shift so if you're not a night owl, that could take a major adjustment.

You are lucky, however, to get two job offers.

whichever pays more and what you want your daily schedule to be...if you don't mind working overnight, take the staples job so you'll have more time during the day, but if you can't handle the sleep schedule of a night job, then take the shoe salesman job...

think about what benefits are attached to each job as well...

Staples sounds like they will be paying you more. "JC Penny" will probably be paying you its minimal and if you didnt bargain your pay, you will probably be making about 7.50. You should have asked during your interview process.

Call and talk to JC Penny's HR or interviewer. Perhaps you may have a chance to bargain your salary.

Good Luck
