I just seem to here about attacks all too often. I know the owners are sometime to blame but these dogs can just turn at the flick of a switch. I know all dogs are dangerous but the dangerous dogs register has a statistic that these dogs cause more fatalities and attack more than any other dog.

I own a Rottweiler. She is 11 and I've had her since she was 8 wks old. She is an awesome dog. We have competed in obedience and agility over the years. She has been trained and socialized all her life.
My experience with this breed of course is limited to just the one dog. However, I've owned many other breeds of dogs. My Rottie is different. She is naturally protective...very protective. And while she is a super friendly dog and loves people, she would and has gone after anyone invading her property. Her favorite thing to do is guard.
She is also very strong and powerful.
I don't think the breed should be banned, but I also think many breeds, like the Rottweiler should only be owned by experienced dog people. Also, owners who will train the dog for life and not just one beginners class at Petsmart! And, owners who socialize the dog well. Not someone who will keep the dog in their backyard all the dogs life. I also do not believe people with young children should own a Rottweiler unless they are very experienced owners and know the risks of having a high drive dog around a child. Like, never leave the child and dog unattended....never.
Having said all that, I can say my Rottie is one of the best dogs I have ever owned. I just don't think it's a breed for the average pet owner.

Rottweilers are not dangerous, no more than any other dog. The unfortunate thing for this magnificent breed is that some incredibly stupid people have bought them, with no understanding or even attempt to understand the breed.

The self same stupid people then don't bother to train or socialise their dog, or even more stupid and dangerous by far allow young children to take them for a walk, or even leave them with people who are ill equipped to properly care for them.

You might just as well say that all teenagers should be put down, because a very small minority are mindless thugs.

I should point out here I am not a Rottie owner but owned a Doberman for 12 years and she was branded much the same because of her looks and colouring.

Rottweilers, Dobermans or Pits do not turn at the flick of a switch. I'd love to know who actually makes these lists of statistics. There are reasons (most of the time) why these dogs attacks and I am sure all the details prior to the attacks are not given by their owners. I have always heard that Dobermans will turn on their owners & I have owned 9 of my own over the past 26 years and NEVER have I had one turn on me or attack anyone else for that matter. Should they be banned, NO!!! Should irresponsible or ignorant humans be banned from owning these powerful breeds, YES!!!!

The funny thing about statistics is that they can be bent to suit anyone's propaganda. There are no reliable statistics on dog bites for several reasons. For example, not all dog bites are reported, especially if it was not a serious bite. Also, dog breeds are identified by the victim or other untrained personell who often mis-identify dogs.

I honestly don't believe that you could list a single dog breed or mix that hasn't bitten or attacked someone at some point in history. And there are at least 27 breeds that have been listed as responsible for human fatalities, including dachshunds, pomeranians, west highland white terriers, and beagles just to name a few seemingly unlikely candidates. Large powerful breeds make for a more sensational story, so that's what the media snaps up. Some of the nastiest dog bites (like the one in France that resulted in the first human face transplant) have been from labrador retrievers, a breed commonly thought to be friendly and benign. Furthermore, it has been proven time and again that banning "dangerous" breeds doesn't reduce the number of dog bites and attacks. There has not been a reduction in the number of dog bites or attacks in areas where Breed Specific Legislation has been enacted. In the very VERY rare cases where it has been noted, it has been proven to be a result of better public education on how to act around dogs and how to raise dogs responsibly and NOT as a result of the ban itself.

Once you start banning a few breeds...the ones that seem to be big, bad and scary, it opens the door to any and all other breeds. Italy started with a short list of about 13 or so breeds that it considered dangerous and either banned or severely restricted. The list now includes over 90 breeds, including welsh corgies and border collies. Pretty soon, it will be difficult or illegal to own any dog weighing more than 10lbs in Italy! Banning breeds is just the first step to eliminating all dog ownership.

I think it's largely down to the fact that the dangerous breeds, like rotties and pit bulls are attractive to the low life in society. Before you all start on the thumbs down button, I'm not suggesting that all owners are irresponisible low life, but these people do go for this kind of dog simply because they have a 'hard' reputation. They deliberatley train them to be aggressive and in some cases, use them as a weapon, or for fighting.

As for other breeds attacking people, yes they do, but because of their size and strength these dogs do far more damage than most. Get real.

Ok, like I said, it's mostly down to moronic owners rather than the dog, but if you don't ban the breed, how do stop the scum from owning them? It's impossible.

To set the records straight, God did not make the Rottweiler. Man did. All dogs are descendants of the grey wolf.
Should the Rotti be banned? Most certainly not. But some irresponsible owners should!
If a dog has a behavioural problem you can bet that 95% of them are that way because of their owners.

Keep in mind the dangerous dog register likely included rott mixes in the rott statistics. This can make for unfair stats. If you have a dog that is 40% rott and 60% something esle is it fair to call it a rott? That happens a lot.

No dogs turn at the flick of a swtich. There are many signs way before anything like this happens, usually the owners ignore them or are not aware. Just like you said, it's not the dogs, it the irresposible owners.

Most if not all of the attacks are usually done by unaltered and unleashed dogs.

NO a dog is is only as dangerous as the (OWNER). common sense tells us that dogs and kid's do'nt mix. May it be a great dane... or a mini breed. Personally I don't believe in so called(bad dogs)....Any dog wants to please their master's. So if a dog is well trained, and well behaved he will be a pleasure. Again common sense must prevail. YOU do not mix any dog with kids. I have got 2 of the most trustworthy dogs, Yet when my 1 year old grandson visits, there is no way I'd allow the dog's into the living room. or anywhere that my grandson want's to go............I am of the opinion that The owner's of these dogs REALLY (have the problem) and areusing and encouraging these dogs to booster their own ego's....Sad...Sick Person's they....REALLY....ARE

Absolutely not. I am an owner of a Rottweiler and he is the most gentle and docile dog you have ever met. Its unfair that you tar all Rotties with the same brush. They are very intelligent and deserve more credit. The nature of the dog is down to the owner. They have a bad name because their bite does more damage than any other dog. All dogs can bite. Not picking on any individual breed but Jack Russel's are known to be very snappy.

Dangerous Dogs Act website? Give us the link then and prove the accusations you are making about this lovely breed. A well bred Rottweiler is a joy to know. Unfortunately, many of the idiot owners are not.
It's already been proved that breed specific legislation does not work.
