Hi Brittany... you don't say how old you are, which would help alot. However I am going to assume you are a young adult. What you might want to try is an Open Journal...not the kind you're thinking of... What you do is get a blank journal and write your dad a letter, short note, anything to get it started. Tell him that you would like to get to know him better and ask a few questions like: what's your favorite color; what's your best/worst memory of your father (could tell you plenty)... Anyway, every time one of you is done writing, leave the journal for the one due to answer next. Then, start asking your dad out...to the movies, to lunch/dinner, a game of pool, etc. You have to start somewhere...and it's better than not making the attempt at all. Good luck...keep me posted... :)

Have you ever been close? If not, then sit down take a piece of paper and write down things you know that your Dad may like (baseball game, favorite restaurant, tennis, swimming, certain movie) and then make which you are willing to suggest you would do with him.
Depending on how old you are, cook him his favorite dinner, invite him to a movie, or a nice drive to his favorite restaurant.
There is no reason you can't write him/call him and/or talk to him about how you would like to have a closer relationship with him.
Letting him know that you want to be closer is the first step.
Good luck!

This will take ALOT of courage but what you do is talk to him. Get him sit down with him and basically say this: we dont have a relationship i really wish we were alot closer and i could talk to you about stuff I want to come to you when I need help I want you to be a part of my life. Or something like that. good luck!

Almost anything you say to open up a dialog will be fine with him. Maybe you could suggest a simple outing or activity you both enjoy and try doing that together. It's far easier to accomplish than you might imagine, because I'll bet he wants to have a better relationship with you, too. Good luck

Suggest doing something together, that he likes.
Not a movie, unless you can talk about it after.
Guys are more comfortable doing stuff than talking.
Does he have a hobby? Work around the house?
Go fishing, or hiking, or take long drives?
Offer to help him, wash dishes or the car together.
Go shopping, but not for you, help pick out a shirt.

Ask him to lunch or something. Basically go to a neutral spot. A place that is neither his territory nor yours. Tell him you would really like to have a good relationship with him and ask him what he thinks you need to do to achieve it. After he tells you then ask him, "If I do that, will you do this?".
