Ok, so my mom's maiden name is Costello.

First question: What nationality do you think of when you say that name?

Mom's Irish as is her last name bt everybody thinks it's Italian or Spanish and pronounces it the same. Which would be fine if that were our heritage.

Second question: Do any of you have or know somebody who has thins last name, and what is you nationality?

Yes, Costello is Irish. It is pronounced Costilow in Ireland and some people in Ireland spell it that way. However, there was a well knowned gambler named Costello that was Italian. In the movie, The Sting, he was portrayed but they had him as Irish. I saw the movie with some nuns from Ireland and they really loved it.

In the movie someone said, "He's the strangest Irishman you'll ever meet. He doesn't drink. He doesn't smoke and he doesn't chase women. But he gambles."
A relative of one of the nuns heard about it and said," I'm glad he did something right."

Now people who do family trees find that surname origns and meanings are not all that important. They frequently can come from many nationalities.

Ancestry.Com shows 1649 Costello immigrants came from Ireland, 249 Great Britain, 237 England, 13 from Scotland, 11 from Italy, 10 from Germany.

See what I tell you.

Now probably a lot of the ones who were identified coming from Great Britain, England and Scotland were Irish.

There are message board on Rootsweb. You can put a message in under a surname or location. When you put one in on Rootsweb it will show up on Ancestry.Com and also the mailing list.'

There are message board on Genealogy.Com, too.

Now, information in family trees on any website must be taken as clues not as fact as most is not documented. Even if you see the same information over and over by different submitters, a lot of copying is being done. There are errors in those trees.
What that means is there are people copying errors over and over.

Rootsweb and FamilySearch.org has family trees.

If you wish to research your family history, just tell us on this board. There are plenty of people who can give you a lot of good ideas and advice.

Now since you have given a name, there are coats of arms (misnomer family crest) on the internet and you might be furnished a link. See the link below.

We have the name Patillo in my part of the country and a lot of people think it's Italian but it's Scottish. Sometimes on records it is spelled Patillow or Patilloe.

The name Costello in Ireland is of Anglo-Norman origin deriving from the de Nangle family who were based in the Province of Connaught. The family adopted the Gaelic name Mac Oisdealbhaigh and the Sept name eventually became anglicized as Costello. The majority of descendants can still be found in the West of the country.
The Irish surname Costello owes it's origin to the Norman family, the Nangles, who came to Ireland during the Norman Invasion of the twelfth century, meaning "sons of Oisdealb", who was himself the son of the celebrated Gilbert de Nangle. The Costellos are described in the "Annals of the Four Masters" as the sons of Oisdealb". This family held lands in County Mayo, in the barony of Costello (named for them), in the east of that county, until the end of the sixteenth century. In 1565, their principal seat was in Ballaghadereen. The feuding between the Costellos and their neighbors the MacDermots, gave rise to many a tale, none more moving, perhaps, than the tragic love story of Una MacDermot, daughter of the last chief of that name, and the son of the chieftain MacCostello; they now lie in adjoining graves in Trinity.

It is Italian, but also Irish. Most of the people I've met who have the name were Irish.
In Ireland, it originated with the Anglo-Normans.
The origin is supposed to be the name "Nangles" (can't see the connection) I checked Internet under Costello-family.us
There was an Irish Prime Minister, John Costello 1948.

Costello is often mistaken for italian but in fact it is both Irish and Italian. My Mother is Irish and I grew up in what came to be an Italian neighbourhood.
