The APBT is the greatest dog there is. It is a great family dog and is very good around children. The can be aggressive to other dogs but not people. Mine will lay on the floor next to my baby grandson for hours. She loves anyone that comes to the house. She was raised with my other two dogs, a Chi/Rat Terrier and a Beagle, and they run around and play all the time.

That depends entirely on the owner. Many breeds, pitbulls included, make wonderful pets, as long as they are trained with a firm hand from the time they are young. They need consistency and discipline, and you MUST establish yourself as the leader early on. Some of the sweetest dogs i've known are pitbulls. A reputable breeder or shelter should be able to help you with the best way to train the pitbull. But if you cant devote the time or are unable to be firm with the animal, do yourself and the dog a favor and do not adopt it. Its a pity that a few poorly trained pitbulls have been used as the representatives of the entire breed, causing them to be marked as vicious and unpredictable, and to be outlawed in places like th UK and California.

My cousins little girl she was 3 got attacked by their own pit bull, it was raised around kids and very well trained and very friendly. She was sitting on the couch with her grandma, whenthe pit came in and attacked the little girl. This attack was unprovoked. My cousin his wife and the grandma all tried to get the pit off the girl. They tried everything nothing worked, my cousin finally went and got a pry bar, shoved it into the dogs mouth and twisted like hell. Finally the dog let go. That little girl almost died. She was in the hospital for 2 months, had many blood transfusions because she lost so much blood. Her face is scarred from just above her left eye to under her chin. The scars have faded some over the years, but they are still noticable. When people ask her what happened, she will come right out and tell them.

It all depends on how you raise them. Pitbulls get a bad reputation because of incidents that occur when they are not trained properly. Honestly if there were no pitbulls another breed would get a similar reputation. With love and the proper training your pitbull will be an excellent dog. Socialize him while he is still young with other dogs and even kids. But like with any dog be sure to watch your dog with them. Kids will be kids.

Pit bulls were once called the nanny dog because of their love of children. News hype and letting other do thinking for you as taken this noble breed to the brink of extinction. They make great pets. You should never leave a APBT alone with a Small child, but of coarse you should not leave any large dog alone with a child. Pits are hard to train. They have high intelligences and can by hard headed. I have a pit. He is my service dog. HE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN TRAINED FOR THAT KIND OF WORK IF THEY WERE TRULY BAD DOGS. I have a 1year old living in my home. If I let the baby cry he comes sits in front of me and barks till I take care of her. When a stranger comes to the door he is between them and the stranger. Pits are great dogs, there is no such thing as a bad breed. They all need to be trained loved and taken care of. One more thing know where you are buying your pit fromm, never ever by a pit from a backyard breeder. Most have no idea what they are doing and pay no attention to what raits they are breeding into the puppies

Of course. They just need a good upbringing is all, just like any other dog. They are not some kind of "Super Species" of dog like most people want to believe. Any dog is going to have moments where they may seem unpredictable and viscious. People just put more emphasis on the pitbull just to make them seem tougher, that's all. If you're interested in one, go ahead and get one.
However, if you do decide to get one, and if you really do care for it, I would keep it away from any urban areas. The wrong person may have his/her eye set on it and may want to mug you and steal it and possibly use it for dogfighting. Not saying that this is going to happen, but there is a good chance that it might. This has happened before in my area like a year or two ago so you will have to be cautious. People are crazy these days, and they are even crazier about dogfighting til the point that they will go to the extremes just to get one.

They are great family dog and do great with children. (Hey, the little rascal's dog was a pit bull) They are not good guard dogs as people often think. They are loyal and becasue they are people orientated are easier to train. They require daily obedience training and lots of exercsie. They can be dog aggressive so it's important for you to do your research before deciding to bring one into your home. Adopting a pit bull that is 2 years or older is the best move because they dog has already gone through maturity and you'll know exactly what you are getting temperament wise.

Yes they are great dogs, but they can be very jealous and since they are very strong and have that lock jaw thing, you must train them well and always be very cautious. Give them the love and attention they need and they will thrive just like any other dog :)
People say they attack children but that is only because ignorant people start cooing at the child like they would to the dog and he then feels jealous so he is angry at this child, but if you divide the attention equally you should not have this problem. A dog becomes a member of the family and needs as much love and care as a child.

There is no such thing as a bad dog. . .bad owners yes.
They require a balance affection, excercise and discipline to keep them even tempered.
We own 2 pit bull mixes, they are awesome dogs, good watch dogs and great with kids and company and when properly introduced other dogs.
These dogs are naturally territorial, and are great protectors and watch dogs. They are very loving and loyal.
If you have the time and discipline to show these animals love and excercise I would highly recommend these dogs.

Meaghan is absolutely correct! Get a puppy and train it right. there are two reasons to own a pit...as pets or to breed...we have had ours from about twelve weeks... he is neutered and has been raised as a pet...you must use a lot of physical contact in the beginning...get your dog used to being around people and being touched...touch/pet him all over including feet and legs...even when he is eating...if you establish yourself as the "alpha" and him/her as the pet, you will be fine...my wife hated dogs until we got ours now they are inseparable...he is simply the sweetest thing, as she says...does he bark at strangers and anyone who approaches the house, yes he does...and strangers don't need to know he wouldn't hurt a fly...but he is the best dog I've ever known and we love him
