When a man and a woman first make love they become one as described in the scripture below. In gods eyes when Adam and Eve first made love they were married. One reason I suppose for remaining a virgin until you meet the one you love.
Matthew 19:4-6
4"Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female, 5 and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? 6 So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

Marriage is between the people involved. It's only when churches and the state became involved there was a need for witnesses. It's not the minister or the registrar who does the marrying, he (or she) is only a witness to make it legal.
Adam took Eve as his wife. If you believe the story literally, then they were married and we're not a race of bastards.

Genesis chapter 2 v 24.
This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.

Yeah! They got married in Las Vegas, Nevada and they stayed at the MGM Grand. They gamble just a little bit because they have to fly back the next day to the Garden of Eden.
Didn't you get the invitation?

Yes. There may not have been a ceremony that we are used to seeing, but they were married by God.

Yes! They were the first pair in history. Marriage is the second oldest institution in the world. The oldest institution is the Sabbath.

No, so when they had sex, that was another part of their sin.
Do you think Cinderella married Prince Charming before they went all the way? That has about as much relevance.

In the sense that God put them together...yes. Just as the marriage vows of today (English) state "what God has joined together, let no man put assunder"
