If you buy a soft bag you will be ok. If they check you only need to fit it into a little cage and you can squash it in.
You should have seen the size of some of the bag people took on board my Ryanair flight last week. I have never seen anyone checking bag sizes.

I have a patagonia bag. I forget the make but I got it two weeks ago. It looks small but I fit two weeks worth of clothes in it for a trip over seas. It is a little pricey but works as a carry on and can convert into a backpack, (clip on straps hidden in a pocket.)

bring whatever hold all you like. they never say anything. i once seen them stow a SUITCASE down the tail of the plane where the airhostesses sit cos it obviously wouldn't fit in the overhead locker. seriously, no need to fork out for an exact one, even a backpack will be accepted.

Why don't you take the measurments to reputable sports shops they will have bags of different sizes. They probably be willing to help you find the one of your size requirements.
