Skates that are native to the eastern US (I live in Maryland) are harmless and they are bottom feeders....Stingray's are a different story they have a barbed stinger that can be 2-10" long and is bony, and barbed. Stingray barb's stick in you easily but don't come out easy. They also have a toxin that they carry that can be transferred thru the stinger that a lot of people have allergic reactions to.
Both have sandpaper like skin on top and are lighter on the bottom.
Skates are not aggressive and are more afraid of you than you are of them.Stingray's will only sting if they feel threatened. Both will swim away if given the chance. Not to worry......Stingray's are at one end of the spectrum and can be dangerous and Skates are at the other end..Harmless and afraid...Relax and enjoy tubing!

The skates in the waters off of Virginia are harmless although some could grow up to 40 pounds and more. I was fishing in shallow water on Long Island when a huge skate swam passed my feet. It looked like the size of a Volkswagen. Yet they don't attack. Some, however, in other parts of the world could be dangerous. There are hundreds of varieties of skates. A few have really sharp skin so if you touch one, they will cut you. Most however are harmless.

Skates sit on the bottom, like a Flounder fish, they're mostly flat, shaped like a diamond kite, and have a barbed stinging tail. I got caught once in my leg in the ocean, at Virginia Beach, when I was 10 years old. To this DAY, I'm still kinda tentative when walking in the water at the beach. LOL. Just the way I am, I guess. I don't know if I just got unlucky that day, but it's stayed with me. Not to try to scare you, but they're down there. Like the previous person said, just shuffle your feet, they'll generally move off without stinging you if they feel your foot that way, step on them and it's a big sting.
And dangerous? Well, the Crocodile hunter got killed by a HUGE one, in the chest, so yes, the big ones can be dangerous to be around in open water diving. He was just unlucky to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I wouldn't be too worried about them. Virginia just has small ones, though. Happy swimming! LOL. - The Gremlin Guy -

People no, boats, yes, hydrofoils are kind of water skates. Many Russian passenger ships in the Baltic are mostly hydrofoils. While British, Scandanavian, German passenger ships are more like cruise liners.

Stingrays give one of the most painful stings imaginable! Not fatal though. Make sure to shuffle your feet if wade fishing on the gulf coast. If you step on one, they WILL sting you.
