There are several ways to get the cheapest airfare:

1. Try one of the big companies: Expedia.com, Travelocity.com. The advantage to them is that they show various airlines and the cheapest prices for both the specific date you want to fly and the dates surrounding that date just in case your plans are flexible.

2. Try various airlines directly (their Web sites). Some of the offer "low price guarantees" meaning that if you find a cheaper flight on another Web site they may match the price or beat it. Each airline is different, though, so just check them out individually.

3. Usually travel agents do not get the lowest fares - and sometimes they tack on a commission (sometimes the airline pays the commission, but check to be sure if you are going to use one). Travel agencies used to be the best way to get the best airfare, but with the Internet now it is just as easy for individuals to check themselves.

Just remember, if you are going to try to get the cheapest flights they normally have restrictions, meaning that you may have to purchase the ticket 14 or 21 days in advance, there may be no refund or change allowed, etc. If you try looking for a last-minute flight you will end up paying a lot more.

If you call an airline directly (they all have toll-free numbers), be sure to ask them if they have any specials. Often they may have specials, but are may not tell you about them initially unless you ask.

Good luck and Happy Travels!
