You mean beyond the norm?

It happens all the time. It's not common, but it still happens. There are whole communities, both online & off, that are devoted to this. Sometimes it's considered 'healthy' (me: ick) & it's a genuinely mutual relationship. Other times it is a sign of mental illness on one or both person's part. It could also be a sign of sexual abuse from when he was younger. Sometimes the guy will attach inappropriate feelings of love to it to justify the mother's actions towards him. (i.e.--she only did it because she loves me & since I love my mom I guess that I should love her in this fashion as will)

Unless you are INCREDIBLY understanding & willing to potentially be 2nd fiddle (or a lover) to his mother all of his life, I'd get out now & run as fast as you can. If he's in a one sided love, then run twice as fast- this guy has problems that you can't solve.

EDIT:

I also remembered that there is another form of "incest" similar to this that is not sexual. It is called emotional abuse. It is where a parent (typically the opposite sex parent) projects all of their emotions onto the child, treating them as if they were an equal adult. The child then feels like they are responsible for their parent's happiness & form a closer relationship than they should be doing.
