Microwaves seem to be decent with starches (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes), and liquids. They perform poorly with meats.

They're helpful, but not all-performing.

On edit: I realized you asked if it was "harmful". To my knowledge microwaves are not harmful in the least (healthwise). Quality-wise, yes, but harming your heath - no.

All you are doing when you are cooking rice in a microwave is heating the water to boiling which doesn't take any less time than boiling water on the stove so I would say it's pretty redundant. You can usually cook a mean casserole in the microwave but don't expect to have a crispy outside crust like you would get in an oven.

So you believe that microwave cooking is harmful? Wherever did that come from!!! There is nothing unsafe about it. It's more about taste. Micros are better for vegetables and liquifying butters or chocolates, etc but it doesn't do meat and starches very well. I defrost or throw in the occasional frozen lunch as well.
