I don't go door to door telling people what I believe, but when I was in high school, I did a few times. Things were different then, though. More people were willing to answer the door to strangers, and it wasn't so dangerous to knock on the door of a stranger. At that time, most people at least believed in God, or at least not so many were willing to say they didn't.

We went in pairs and asked people about what they would say if they found themselves standing before God and he asked why they should be let in to heaven. Then we just carried on a conversation about what we and the other person believed about God. It wasn't adversarial.

The point was really more for us to learn confidence in talking about our faith and to practice doing it, so that we would be better able to talk about our faith in other, more natural situations, but we did have times where people responded and made a decision to follow Christ. That wasn't common, or even expected though.

Afterwards we would all meet back together and talk about the experience and what we may have learned. I learned, that in general, most people were polite and willing to have a civil conversation about their beliefs. Few, if any, would laugh, mock, or slam the door.

Now, I would imagine, there are far fewer people home during the day, and if they are home, they are less likely to open the door. If they do open the door, they are far less likely to invite a stranger in for a conversation about eternity.

Jesus ordered true Christians to do this door to door preaching work. This pre-supposes you are true Christians. If you are not, continue to sit on your rears.

Beyond that, if you saw a fire approaching your neighbors house across the street, would you not bang on his door to warn him? Or no, that is too much effort? Or no, that is too strange to do?

We do see the fire. One that could ruin everything our neighbors have ever known. Of course we warn them while there is time to get to safety.

I don't. But I admire anyone who does, even if they are teaching false doctrine, which I personally believe both the JW's and Mormons preach.

If a person truly believes that without Jesus Christ, you will go to hell when you die, they would crawl over broken glass to reach you, because they care that much.

We (all Christians) are commanded by Christ to "go into all the world" and preach the gospel. Going door to door is how some people obey this commandment. It's not for everyone, but is is for some.
