Actually, some people are wrong. Heretic doesn't mean someone who rejects the teachings of the Church. The word itself means 'to choose' thus a 'heretic' chooses a different teaching. So heretic means to me someone who chooses the unconvential choice i.e chooses religion instead of Christianity but it can be used outside of religion really.

A heretic is someone who holds and professes beliefs that oppose established points of view. The word is usually associated with religion (ie. opposing church dogma), but for me a heretic can be anyone who believes something that runs counter to any widely held belief.
