I'm 18 and will go to college in the fall for nursing. I need a job and would love if it could have some kind of purpose. I really want to make a difference now; instead of waiting until I graduate from college. I would really like to do something that makes a difference, whether that would be organizing fundraisers, running food/clothing drives, helping sick people, etc. I do have my high school diploma and am a really fast learner. My question is: Can I get this kind of job with no degree? Where do I look if this is possible?

(I live in RI and have worked retail for 9 months and can also provide excellent references.)

Thank You!!!

I am sure you are aware that patience is a great virtue, especially for someone in the caring professions, so why not be a little more patient with yourself first. Go to college, get your degree and then you will, as a trained and qualified professional, be able to do a lot more good, for more people, than you can now. You can always work or volunteer during the vacations when you are not studying.
I thoroughly applaud your obvious dedication and enthusiasm, and I well understand your impatience, but you must learn to think long term and prudently if you are really going to make a difference in the world. Good luck to you whatever you decide to do.

Try getting a job in a nursing home, you will get to know some nurses and the residents can really use a kind person to help them as a nurses aid. You may need to take a test or class to become a CNA that is certified nurses assistant. Even if you can't get the job you can volunteer to come in and help the residence with basic needs like feeding or dressing or just visit them and read to them.
Also it will look good on the resume.

Since you're looking at a career in nursing, why not get a postion as a nursing assistant or orderly in one of your local hospitals. That kills two birds with one stone. you get some real hands-on experience with patient care and you help lots of folks in the process. Besides it is directly related to what you're studying too!!

Good luck to ya!

Nursing Home, VA Retirement Home, Residential care Home, Senior Apartments. Adult Day Care, Adult Rec Centers. Is that enough?

Look into non-profit agencies in your area. If you don't know of any, do a Google search or check out www.opportunityknocks.com. You could also check with your church or high school for opportunities as well.
