I am 39 years old. I look my age give a year or two back or forward depending on makeup and clothes. I am at a Kohls store buying a swimsuit I found on sale. The cashier goes through her speel of asking if I want it on the store charge or if I want a store charge. I answer no. She scans the suit and then asks me if I want to use my senior discount! OH MY GOD! I had my 15 month old son with me to boot! I came unglued. Those standing behind me took a few steps back as they knew she was possibly taking her last breath of air where she stood. The guy standing behind me looked at her and asked her what the age for the senior discount was. She said 65. He proceded to tell her she was one dumb ninny. I told her I am no where near 65! i went completely off! The manager had to step in and finish the sale. I told that girl she had better get a brain somewhere because if I had not have had my son with me she would have been eating the floor she stood on. Why are people so dumb!?

Ignorance of youth.

It's not that you looked 65...

It's that young people don't take time to evaluate their words

Wow, someone sure is sensitive about their age aren't they?

That guy behind you was a jerk for calling her a dumb ninny..

And you shouldn't have gone off on her like that.

You should have just said "ma'am, I'm NOT a senior, I'm 39 years old".

By doing and saying that in a polite way, you turn out to be the good girl, she ends up being very embarrassed, and everyone gets a good laugh at the cashier who asked a 39 year old if she wanted the senior discount.

Instead, you've now come off as a very rude customer by going off on her for simply asking if you wanted the senior discount, and have become the bad girl.

Way to go!

Well, this sales clerk was definitely out of line. How one reacts, however is a choice one makes. Your choice was to react with unkind words and treats, and a young child was present to absorb the heated words and exchange.... why would you care what a person thinks about your age whom you may not ever see again for the rest of your life........ out of consideration for your 15 month old son, a few well chosen words, like thank you very much for your consideration, would have ended up this sale peacefully.

IF it was me - i would have rolled about laughing, rather than made a meal of it. age is just a number and it bares no reflection on how you feel inside or how you look outside -
maybe its because im from the UK and we all have a dry sense of humour...

do YOU feel sensitive at the moment about your age or the reality of approaching 40, at what seemed like an ancient age when you were in your teens and early twentys, isnt so old after all....

Here's a question - why did you react so violently? You can't control her behavior, but you CAN control your own. And you did, to a degree, if only because your son was with you. But what if he hadn't been with you? If you'd made her "eat the floor she stood on" you would have been arrested for assault. Was this situation worth being arrested for? Um, NO.

Chill out. Roll your eyes and laugh it off.

It's probably due to the fact that so many people are getting plastic surgery, laser treatments, amd so forth. People who are older now have the option of not looking that way, so guessing someone's real age anymore can be a challenge.

whilst you might have over reacted a touch......but ONLY a touch IMO..............I would have erred on the side of caution had I have been the shop girl as in general IF the old biddies are allowed a discount they would surely make sure that they got it....you had said nothing hence that discount was not for you.............

in fairness to the girl and depending on HER age..........trust me any one that's out of their 20's to the average 16/17/18/19 year old LOOKS [to them] well old.....................

regards and hope that the day went better for you

When I was younger, I had the opposite problem.

I would be well into university, and people would ask me what grade I was in.

If I were thinking quickly then, I would have answered: "grade 2."

from your story. i found YOU to be the one who was rude. you didnt need to make a huge scene goodness sakes. she was probably just used to saying it and it might of slipped. but you had no right to make a scene of yourself. not only did you embarass the cashier, you also embaressed yourself if i was in line behind you i would probbably talk crap about how that lady is overreacting; which is probably what some of the people behind you did.

I agree with you that people are ignorant. Unfortunately, they don't realise they are hurting peoples feelings. I would have been upset, but I would not have acted like that. You could have handled the situation in a more mature manner.
