It creates endorphins which cause you to have a natural high. Thus you will feel better when you run long distances and you will be depressed if you stop. It also improves heart function, lungs, legs, etc. It allows you to see some of the beautiful scenery around where you live, and you might get to meet some nice people.

Positive: It will help with your cardiovascular health. People who run has less hypertension, less heart disease, lower cholesterol. I will also help preventing diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, certain forms of cancer. Distance running also can boost immune system. Finally, exercise in general can help decrease depression and anxiety.
Negative: It is horrible on your joints, especially your knees, hips, ankles, and feet. Distance running can predispose you to have osteoarthritis in older age, especially if you have injury. It also can be hazardous to your kidneys. Runners who are not well hydrated or who takes improper supplements - too much protein, too much potassium, etc - as well as medication (such as Advil, Motrin, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Aspirin - which is why most marathons promote Tylenol, safer for kidneys) can cause their kidneys to shut down after a long race - one of the major cause of hospitalization for runners after marathon. Most of the time, kidneys will recover, but a few runners may end up on dialysis. Running also is bad for the skin - too much sun exposure may increase skin cancer.
All in all, all exercises, including running, is good for everyone. Long distance running is for selected group of people have the will power and the physical ability to do it. There are plenty of benefit, but it will take a toll on your body.
