I'm thinking about getting a new digital slr, either the Canon XTi or Nikon D40. What I'm curious about is whether or not you can just take digital photos with them, or if I need to always shoot film too. I want the ability to shoot film, but I dont want to always have to use it.

Digital SLRs do not take film- there is no empty space inside for 35mm rolls to go...

You could always shoot with a film camera, and get a photo CD during processing, but the resolution won't be as high as something from an Xti or D40. I still keep my Nikon N90s around for when I want to shoot film.

Keep in mind that since scanning and image processing technology improves every year, there is a slight advantage to having negatives or slides- our ability to transfer them to digital will be much better 10 or 20 years from now- but any digital images from today's equipment, well those files are probably as good as they'll ever be.

All of that said, I'd use the D40 most of the time.

Come on Jade stop giving false information. lol

A digital SLR is just that, its digital nothing hard to understand there. If you take out the lens you will see the digital sensor behind it. Had that been a film camera you would see a shutter blind instead. There is no way to fit both of them together. The sensor is pretty much fixed in place.

I am not sure why you would think a "Digital SLR" would not take "digital images"? If you still want to shoot film then I suggest getting a used manual SLR camera. They should be cheap to come by these days.

There is no way for you to do that. A digital SLR is for taking digital pictures only. there is no compartment for film. If you want you could just buy a film SLR body and a Digital SLR body.

I don't know of any digital slr that shoots film, hence the world digital. There are film cameras that you can buy digital backs for and just switch them up when you want to shoot digital or film, but they are expensive. Lately I've only seen digital backs for medium format cameras, which usually wrong about 3 grand and higher. Why would you want to shoot film? I used swear that I would never go digital but when my hubby bought me a digital camera I set my 35mm camera down and never looked back. You can do everything in digital that you can with film, plus its faster and cheaper.

Digital cameras only take digital pictures. There is no film, only a memory card or memory stick. If you want to use film you have to have a separate camera that uses film.

Digital only. I don't know of a camera that will do both.
