That's the title of a speech Frederick Douglass gave in 1852, it's brilliant, everyone should read it.

With that being said, am I not entitled to feel the same way he did? No I cannot possibly claim to have experienced even half of the gross injustice and cruelty that the American slave faced, but in a country where I do not feel free, or even welcomed, do I have reason to feel much patriotism?

As Douglass said in his speech "Opression makes a wise man mad." And today of all days highlights the hypocrisy that is America. For some of us, the celebration of this day is a mere "sham."

So should I just shut up, go to a BBQ, and be happy that I don't live in the Middle East...or should I be a Bah Humbug?

I don't get to excited about White Male Independence day myself but do celebrate the traditions of the day with burgers, lemonade and s'mores. Why turn down any chance for a party? ; )

Black female lesbian atheist?
So you kind of hate everyone? Come on you hate men?
We are really not that bad once you get to know us.
Do you honestly believe that your life as a black female lesbian atheist would be better in the middle east?
Or perhaps Africa?
If this has made you so happy, why do you sound so sad?
I wouldn't accept a life style that made me sad?
write me I want to know, what country do you feel you would be treated better in? what would make you happy?
I seriously want to know.

The fact that you can actually write this speech without fear of repercussions, is enough to celebrate the fourth of July.

Go to the BBQ and use the opportunity to ask people to question their own beliefs. Fan the embers of critical thinking and try to blow them into a flame (be careful not to blow to hard - they might blow out).

Heres a link to Darkwoken's blog where the speech is posted in its entirety.

The 4th of July is the birth day of our country. If you have any appreciation of this country...then celebrate. If you don't appreciate it in any way shape or form...don't bother. Your choice.
